Magic ? to choose, what kind ?

I just got to the point where I can use magic pretty good - Destruction & Restoration,...I'm favoring the Destruction (Sparks, Frostbite). Restoration is great for Ward off spells and healing , of course.

Then, is it just me, or is - Alteration & Illusion Magic, pretty damn confusing.
From what I understand of it.... I don't see where Alteration & Illusion, can be very effective, at least at the lower levels. ( level 22 - Wood Elf)....Can any of you Master Mages, tell me how Alteration & Illusion can be effective ?

The best Alteration spell for combat is Paralyze .
Necromancers/tomb raiders adore Detect Dead.
Mage Armor can mitigate a lot of damage if you wear clothes rather than armor. I do think it sux that the Master spell Dragonhide doesnt have a longer base duration.
Iv`e never done the Spell Absorption thing so someone else can speak to that.

Illusion - Invisibility and Quiet Cast stand out.
It does take a while(and perks) to gain effectiveness vs strong/resistant foes
Illusion at low levels can sometimes leave you high and dry , always have an escape plan.
Relying on Illusion most effective with Master of the Mind perk

alteration and illusion are pretty op tbh

alteration - mage armor (get capped while wearing cloth ftw), 30% magic res, magic absorb, +stability is nice to have (works with slow time shout for example)

illusion - calm, frenzy & fear are awesome tools, plus courage to buff your follower if you have one, invisibility & muffle make you a undetectable shadow without ever training sneaking

+ candle/mage light and clairvoyance are nice quality of life tools.

my mage (is still little) is a destruction pro, but using these schools way too little, because theyre awesome.

edit: also, silent casting for those sneaky types

I'm sure I forgot several great things.
