BTW It's a LOT easier to play a mage in Oblivion than Skyrim

That's what I've always said and its a lot more fun since you actually seem to be a force to be reckoned with since you can make your own spells and even combine completely different schools in one spell like fire damage 50 points on target with soul trap 10 seconds

I agree much eaiser. The Arcane University gives you acsess to tons of thinks that makes being a mage more easy than Skyrim.

Good to hear. I just started playing Oblivion after having played Skyrim. I'm a wood elf, mage. So far I just have the heal and fire, but that fire blast is quite handy when rats are coming after me. I look forward to learning the stuff you guys were talking about.

Medieval, I've found that, when you can create your own spells, drain health is far more economical than damage health, magicka wise. I was able to do 100 pts with drain health, for less magicka than 25 damage health. It can literally turn into one-shot kills with a spell. Muhahaha.

Good because I plan on being a mage in my second attempt at playing this game! So is spell casting similar to Morrowind, where spells can repeatedly fail when cast? Because that was very annoying and I don't want to go through that again!

I've never played Morrowind, but I haven't experienced spell failure. I do know there's a spell efficiency rating, where if you wear heavy armor, for example, your spells don't do 100% damage.

IMO, the spell casting in Oblivion is wonderful. The favs are easy to use (with controller, at least) and you don't have to put down your weapon to cast. You can also cast self and touch spells underwater, so you can touch/kill slaughterfish, etc.

The earliest I've made it to the Mage's guild was lvl 6. Could barely cast a 20 pt fire spell, but suddenly I could created my own 100 pt drain health spell. It would sap all my magicka for a while, but one-hit kill on most creatures. Idk why, but drain health requires much less magicka to use than damage health or elemental magic.

Just started today, and already get the feeling that I'll really enjoy being a mage. Can't wait to get into Arcane U. That place makes the College of Winterhold seem like a shack by comparison!

I won't ruin it for you, unless you want me to, but there is a duplication glitch that makes life considerably easier, just in case.

Also, idk if you knew this already, but in the Imperial City, in the market district, the open-topped sacks don't respawn. Others do, but not the open topped ones. There are three, right in front of Jensine's that I use as a storage base, until I get a house. That, or the Captain's chest in the pirate ship, down at the waterfront.

Thanks for the open sack info, that'll be incredibly useful as I frequent the good ol market district. Now if only there was a glitch that could fix my character's face... she is easily the most hideous thing I've ever created! She's supposed to be a dunmer but the poor girl looks like a fish. Looks aren't everything, but aside from faces I really enjoy the vibrant nature of the graphics. :beermug:

Yeah, my oblivion character looks like a bad '80s stunt double mated with Shrek.

Lizzie, how I do not know, managed to create a pretty hot Oblivion character. I'm sure she spent hours on it. Alas, I know of no fixing glitch. :/

If I may offer a bit more unwanted advice, visit every spell seller you can, including all the guild halls. Each one should have a low level spell seller. Try to get all the basics, even if it's a worthless 3 pt touch spell. When you hit the University, you can only make spells that you already know the components of. It helps immensely to already have them when you need to make stuff.

Early on, at least, the sigil stones you get from crashing the oblivion gates seem to provide a much better means of enchanting weapons and equipment than an actual visit to the enchanter. I got into the habit of making a save, right before I took the sigil stone. If I got one I already had, or a crappy one, I could reload the save and take it again. :)

This turned out to be huge advice Joe. :beermug:
Last night I collected my third stone, and had to reload about 10 times before getting something good. I also used this technique on the second stone I collected, and not many reloads were needed. Although I rely mainly on spells, (conjuration, destruction, and restoration), having a shock-enchanted blade early in the game has made the difference between life and death on a few occasions.
