@DrunkenMage , weren't the Argonians kept out of Windhelm to lessen the risk of Argonian/Dunmer fighting?

Never explained, it is only a guess given when defending the Stormcloaks. There is no reason given as to why they were banished, except that it was under Ulfric's decree.

Though if it was to lessen the risk of them fighting, why now? The last major Dunmer/Argonian conflict was 190 years ago. There was only a minor skirmish 51 years ago.

They have no problems with each other in Riften, and an Argonian is meant to drink inside the Cornerclub (doesn't due to his schedule).

None of the Argonians or Dunmer are exactly openly saying negative things, or are violent/aggressive towards each other. If anything both the Dunmer and the Argonians are more against Ulfric and the Stormcloaks.

"The Stormcloaks are gone, and so is their prejudice."
- Scouts-Many-Marshes

I would say the Argonians were removed so Ulfric could gain majority Nordic support in Windhelm.

I don't think that's Stormcloak-specific, but a generic line of dialogue for all Nords. Or at least city guards. I know city guards, and not only in Windhelm, have called me "lizard" or "cat" or "elf" when I'm playing those races.

It is Stormcloak Guards and Stormcloak aligned Hold Guards. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Guard_Dialogue#Reactions_to_Player.27s_Race

On the other hand, we have evidence that Torygg did not allow Argonians into Solitude—Ahtar the headsman (most definitely not a Stormcloak, by the way) says "I'd fancy a chance at that Jaree-Ra's scrawny neck. Filthy Argonian never would have set foot in this city, if High King Torygg was still alive, I can tell you that."

Jaree is a criminal, is suspected by townsfolks and the Solitude Captain. We already have one Argonian who lives in Solitude working for the East Empire Company and has been there for a number of years. If there was a ban on Argonians in Solitude, why would it cease under Elisif? She was his wife and maintains his policies.

What Ahtar is meaning is that Jaree wouldn't be so bold to stroll right into town while the High King was still alive.

Maven holds the power, not the rest of the family. If Maven was to pass on, all her political and underworld connections would vanish with her. People fear Maven, not her halfwit heirs.

She is getting on in years.

Hemming wouldn't get the political power, but the economic factor is still there. And he's looking to expand the mead sales as well. And money will give you power unless you f!ck up royally... of course, even if Hemming would succeed it would go down with Sibbi for sure. But until then, things don't look that bad. Unless of course the Aldmeri do manage to take over, I don't think they're fond of mead.

The mead apparently tastes like piss and it only sells because of Maven. Though without Maven's fear factor the meadery would decline, and one of the workers is already selling it cheap.

The money is good, but Maven's power comes from her political and underworld connections. Sibbi is only good when he's getting direction from Maven, he's unreliable on his own. Maven worked hard to get where she is, her heirs didn't. They lack her drive and finesse. Hemming is too busy trying to get laid and getting rejected by the Court Wizard to pose any real threat.

Maven knows how to play the game of politics. Hemming would be more akin to a richer Siddgeir.

Isn't it weird that Ulfric and Scouts are listed as friends (Disposition Level 1)? I've never married Scouts, but I imagine Ulfric would be in attendance as one of his guests.

Oh, nearly forgot;

It isn't the mead that tastes like piss, it's Skyrim's wine.
"Ugh. The wine in Skyrim tastes like urine compared to the fine vintages we had in Valenwood." -Niruin

Judging from Siddgeir's taste (and since he's the most spoiled brat-like character in the game, it's gotta be accurate), the mead must be pretty good. "Work? I demand tribute before you can be considered for any real tasks. How about drink? None of that local piss. Real Black-Briar Mead, fresh from Riften."

Let's not kid ourselves. Black-Briar Mead is swill. The only thing keeping it successful is Maven. Word on the street was that Honningbrew tasted better, cost less and Sabjorn didn't shove it down everyone's throat. - Mercer

Siddgeir is a brat, but he's an idiot who likes things cause they're more expensive. Probably only likes Black-Briar Mead simply because it has Black-Briar on the bottle. Mercer enjoys a lavish lifestyle, rich things and the best things. Spending all the Guilds wealth on them, which caught the attention of Guild Master Gallus Desidenius.

Not to mention the Revelers world encounter; "Black Briar? How dare you shove that swill in my face. I'd rather drink mammoth drool!"

Thieves Guild would aid Maven in cornering the market. "If competitors tried to buy honey from Aringoth, we'd steal the shipments." - Brynjolf

Maven keeps the meadery running, without her it fails. The person who controls the workers has no authority and only does what Maven instructs, has no ability to lead. The workers try and undermine Maven, three others are at the bottom of the lake in the past year alone for screw ups. Also with various costly mistakes. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:To_Be_Read_Immedately!

... And because competition is being actively erased from even starting, Blackbriar mead remains #1. ;)

Until Maven kicks the bucket.

Hemming: "So, have you thought about what I said?"
Wylandriah: "I find the concept of sleeping with you not only repulsive, but morally unsettling. Does that answer your question?"
Hemming: "You listen to me. I'd be careful wagging that pretty little tongue at me like that otherwise I may just have it cut off."
Wylandriah: "Just stay away from me and maybe I won't weave a spell to shrink something that matters to you."

Nah, lucky for Hemming there's plenty of Dibellan worship in Riften.

Maven: "Haelga, I like you, so I'm only going to say this one time. If you ever try and 'practice the Dibellan arts' with Hemming again, I'll make sure that pretty little face loses its beauty."
Haelga:"He wasn't protesting, Maven."
Maven: "Of course he wasn't you stupid whore; he's a man. Now I'm not going to warn you again. Is that clear?"
Haelga: "Very well."
