What type of mage should my Orc be?

I've finally done it! Urag gro-Shab, you shall no longer be alone!

Starting a new playthrough as Mogrod the Crooked, I quickly discovered that my naturally low magicka reserves and resistances were to be quite the hinderance. Even as I focus on getting as much magicka as I can and minimizing spell costs, this leaves me very vulnerable to attack, mainly because casting Oakflesh almost completely drains my magicka bar. Even by the time its recovered enough for me to start throwing fireballs, the effect has usually worn off (unless I dip my beak into a rapidly dwindling supply of Magicka potions). I know using the novice alteration perk seems like an obvious solution, but those perks are all going towards destruction and Illusion ATM, because at the start my damage output was pathetic.

So I had an idea; why not be a Battlemage! I already have a racial advantage using heavy armour, and it would definatly shore up my defences (without the need for flesh spells). But that wasn't my plan for when I made this character (Neither was being a regular mage either, but a Captain-America esque Spell-shield fighter), and it would mean I would have low magicka [regeneration], unless I used Enchanting, but my perks per level would already be spread thin enough....

So my question for you folks is, where should I invest my perks in for defence? Alteration, Heavy armour or Block?

You certainly could go battlemage. Why not use Heavy Armor. An Orc already gets a bonus for that.

Have you though about getting a staff? Even a flames or frost staff can be very useful and you start getting bolts pretty early as well.

Why are you only concentrating on Destruction & Illusion perks? I always start by getting the novice level perks on all the schools when playing a mage and then moving on from there.

Personally I've come to love a pure mage (other than they're poor as church-mice since soul-gems are not easy to fill as a mage), and alteration is my friend.

A little raise the dead/cast oakflesh/kill your undead raises all three school very quickly (as well as your level) and, once you get muffle, illusion just rises all on it's own (sorry you illusion fans, but fury and calm do jack spit to increase you skill).

Honestly? any can work. I have an Altmer warrior/crusader with weapons first (female) so I can assume an orc pure mage can work too.

I would say that more than likely, you would want to go battlemage.

DON'T EXPECT SPOILER WARNINGS FROM ME
Any race can do anything, amount gold u can have is infinite, and dungeons reset after a while. Only difference is power and inborn resistance, but if berserk mode dubles spell dmg, u can say and orc is one of the best, I doubt it does tough.

Berserk only double melee damage, not spell damage.

If you are going to make an orc mage, and refer to it as such I feel pure mage is the funnest way. Berserk becomes a tanking tool since you have to spend a few levels putting magicka over health. Let's face it orc mage is win. And if you ain't pure, you can't endure.

I shall necro this thread, merely to say that an Orc Mage is a good choice. Lore wise you're good too, since it was the powerful Orc Shamans that first taught the Reachmen 'Hedge-magic'.

Id go battlemage. Orcish armor with a matching hood (adept maybe) would look pretty tough. Also remember that staffs are your friend early on for a mage.

I highly recommend the Staff of Paralysis, the Staff of Hags Wrath and the Revenent Staff. They can be found at any level in the wilderness/caves.

I had an idea like this! I'm not far from one of the Reach strongholds ATM, maybe I could roleplay as the Tribes Shaman. Could be interesting.

Shaman huh?

Forsworn Armor of the Gods on an Orc would fit for RP, and maybe reanimating that Forsworn Orc Borkul the Beast pretending he's your Orc Brother or something ^^

Yeah... he's dead. Disintegrated too.
My current playstyle is leaning towards battlemage. Currently a LvL 15 Shaman, Mogrog needs to work on his Illusion; too much fighting Draugr has left him relying solely on destruction and Alteration.

New Update- Having started the Dawnguard questline (not ready to face Automatons in CoW questline) I have decided that Mogrog shall become a Vampire lord! Mainly to benefit his Illusion, this idea left me intrigued as to what a VL Orc would look like... the image of which I currently do not have saved on my Tablets photo gallery.
Stay tuned folks for some pics!

I have played as a Orc mage, did not go too far as I was playing another character and focused more on that one than the Orc mage one which was nice to play. I may have a look at giving different armour to make my orc mage look better and fierce to the foes it encounters. I may see which staff works best, and which ones gives more powers when fighting my foes in the game.
