is this a glitch (Thalmor party quest)

Alright I need some help. I'm on the quest where i talk with Delphine and then I have to go to the party in Thalmor. So I do everything I'm supposed to do, and the guy leads me into the kitchen where I'm supposed to get my equipment out of this chest...but it's empty. So I try to continue on with the quest but as soon as the guards see me they slaughter me in about a minute because i have no weapons/armor. I tried backing out and reloading, but every time the chest is empty.

I watched the youtube walkthrough of this quest, and sure enough the chest is supposed to be full of your gear. I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do here. This happen to anyone else?

Did you meet with Malborne before the quest to give him your gear? Delphine should have instructed you to meet him at the Winking Skeever (the Inn/Pub in Solitude) to talk with him about the mission and give him any gear you would be needing to complete the quest. He sneaks it in, and hides it in the chest for you.

Delphine takes everything else in your inventory back to Riverwood to keep safe for you until you return. What she takes will not be in the chest at the Thalmor Embassy, only what you give to Malborne before hand.

yeah, i'm like 99.9% sure i gave it to him. He was sitting at a small round table. I guess i can try to load back to where I'm talking with delphine and then I can go meet him again and continue on with the quest from there. But anyway, he tells me my stuff is in the chest and i should collect it, but it's empty.

But if I can't for some reason, then what do I do? I'm pretty sure this is an essential quest, right? Maybe I can run past the enemies without fighting them.

I was only checking since you didn't mention it.

This is a well known glitch with the quest, and sadly there really is no good solution for it. Even worse is, yes, it is a vital quest if you wish to continue advancing along the main plotline of the game. Most players say not even reloading a previous save will fix it in some cases. However, it's probably the best choice. Just make sure you don't give him any Dragon Priest masks or any goods marked as "stolen" as both of these can be lost. The best option is to give him the bare minimum number of weapons and items you think you'll need to make it through, everything else will be safe with Delphine, and if you really want to be safe with your items you can store them in your own home. This is one of the buggier quests, hopefully they'll get it patched soon.

okay, i'm just now getting back to this. I'm gonna try loading back and meeting up with Malborne at the Winking Skeever and I stashed almost everything at my house.

If I go through this again and my items aren't in the chest at the Thalmor party, what am i supposed to do? Can i get through the quest by running past the guards or do i have to fight them?

Okay, well I loaded back to a previous save and started the thalmor / party part of the quest over. Same thing. My weapons didn't show up in the chest in the kitchen. So I went searching through the kitchen for something I could possibly use to fight the guards. And behold, I found a woodcutters axe and enough cheese blocks to refill my health. So I killed the first two nights and took their elven armor and swords and I was good to go. It was a total pain with no health potions or anything else, but i finally escaped. And at the very end in the ice cave i was going to get killed by the troll so i just ran by him.

I still have no idea what happened to the sword and armor i gave to Malborne.

The key to everything was finding the axe in the kitchen.
