Morndas ~ Raven Rock

Filthy nords are good for one thing at least. The right amount of gold to the right boat captain and my passage to Solstheim was secured. A pity I had to leave my powerful pets behind. I'm certain I'll find more in good time. But I understand the captain's reluctance to take undead aboard his vessel.

Raven Rock is not too much unlike how I remember it. Perhaps a bit more depressed than my memory recalls, but otherwise just as tiny and insignificant as ever. The dunmer don't much care for me, being and outsider and a breton. Ironic that I'm actually one of them and they are unaware.

Tonight I'll lodge in Raven Rock. There is no reason to leave the city now, not with the light fading. I don't remember Solstheim that well, and I'm going to need to secure protection for my coming journey anyways. This breton fool of a lady did well to learn the arts of conjuration and illusion, but she is otherwise quite weak and not suitable for solitary travel.

Neloth. If there were no pride left in the world Neloth would still have some. I can't say that I fully blame him, as his powers are beyond the imagination of most. With the right approach I will be able to glean some of that knowledge and power from him, and enhance my own significant powers.

I journeyed halfway here under the protection of a skilled swordsman I had hired in Raven Rock. And after attempting to spend the night in an abandoned cabin I relieved him of his services after we discovered the cabin was not so abandoned. I bid him his leave and departed the following morning with the two bandits we had discovered in the cabin's cellar. They were my pets for the rest of the day until a very large beast sent one of them flying into the sea. But he was quickly replaced after the monster was slain. A man with obvious mental issues approached me with a story that makes little sense, and then he turned violent and his life was ended ... and then reborn into death to serve myself.

He spoke of a black book that has peaked my interest, despite his confusing rambling. The book, according to this somewhat delusional fool, is in Neloth's very tower. Perhaps the closer I align myself with Neloth the better chance I'll have of locating this book. It wouldn't be at all unlike Neloth to possess something very powerful and keep it secret.

But first I must foster a relationship with him. For the moment that means bringing him a sample from one of the ash monsters. There is still a fair amount of light left today, so I'll leave now and return with the sample if possible. Neloth will be pleased with that I'm sure.

Middas ~ Dwemer Ruin

Against all reason, I'm growing accustomed to having these mindless bodies fight for me. I can see the appeal this practice had for the previous owner of my current body. If nothing else she perfected her craft and it is to my benefit now.

Neloth lacked accommodations for me for the night, so I bid him farewell and set out to see what I could find nearby. From his tower I could see a structure in the distance that resembled a dwemer ruin. While not my first choice of places to spend a night, it might have to do. So I set off in that direction with my pets in tow.

While I was most concerned with encountering dwemer machinations, we only found a camp of bandits entrenched in the outside ruins. Several of the bandits were worthy opponents, showing skill with magic in addition to traditional weaponry. My pets didn't fair well at all. Not that I should have expected more. They were unarmed after all. Fists can only do so much in the face of magic and steel.

But I know some useful conjurations, and these daedric apparitions faired quite well against the reavers. One by one they fell aside and when it was all over I had two new pets in my possession. This pair seems much more suited to my protection needs. It is quite unfortunate that the magically-inclined vermin fell into the water upon their deaths and were swept away by the current. These will have to do for now.

I've put the book to the test.

This morning ... or I suppose it is the morning still to come ... difficult to clarify this point ... regardless, I awoke and set off with my pets to pay Neloth a visit. I managed to set off a trap that I'm fairly certain was a dwemer trap, given it's function and incorporation into the ruins. I distinctly remember falling to the stone, pain and dizziness consuming every fiber of my being, followed by a feeling as though my stomach were being flung into the heavens. And everything went black.

And just as quickly, or for an eternity ... I cannot tell, I found myself opening my eyes as if all I had done was blink. In my hands was the book, having just written the prior words to this entry. The ink was still fresh. I had died ... tomorrow ... and come back to ... now.

It is truly a glorious moment. All my years and years of sacrifice have led to this singular moment of triumph. I live!

I did, yes. This character cannot die because he has the gem and the book together. Doesn't mean things won't get interesting, though. d;-)

Turdas ~ Dwemer Ruins

Neloth sent me on an errand today as if I'm his servant. His days are numbered. I'm not anyone's servant. His self-absorbance will be his undoing ... at my hand.

But for now I play the role, to achieve an end. This miserable wretch requires heart stones, so I will find him heart stones and then take what I need .. his knowledge, and eventually .. his life. Perhaps I'll retain his tower when I do so, but that's a consideration for another day.

Today I attempted to locate and collect some of these heart stones, but I was assaulted by ash spawns almost immediately. They are not weak creatures by any means, and it's unfortunate I don't have the ability to raise them up to fight for me. As it was, my bandit companions each died .. twice during the skirmish. But I raised them each up again and the fight was eventually won.

By the time it was over it was getting late and I deemed it best to return to the ruins. I'll try again tomorrow.

I've acquired Neloth's precious heart stones and given them to him. And yet still he whines incessantly like a newborn infant. Now he has asked me to locate one of his assistants that hasn't been serving his needs appropriately. Is this my current fate? To be chained to the ankle of a full grown infant while I slowly improve my abilities to the point where I can make this annoying child an undead follower of mine? My patience is being put to the ultimate test, and I will not succumb to defeat, as easy as it would be to accept. No. I will play this game to it's end, and obtain what I want.

It's only a matter of time before I have the ability to render this fool speechless. I will wait.

Sundas ~ Raven Rock

Based on minimal information from some of Neloth's other servants, I've traveled back to Raven Rock to find this Varona. All of yesterday was wasted traveling here, and then wandering around the city inquiring as to the whereabouts of the missing servant. Precisely nothing has been revealed regarding her, and I'm now going to have to search the surrounding hills to see if she is somewhere nearby or perhaps was killed on her way here. I may kill her myself when I find her simply for the inconvenience of it all.

Sundas ~ Neloth's Tower

Hours upon hours upon hours spent walking around Raven Rock, with nothing to show for it. I found no sign of Varona, or anyone else for that matter. This is such a colossal waste of my time and talents.

So I returned to the tower, and spoke to the others once again, and once again they told me that Varona had headed off to Raven Rock. Neloth himself didn't want to be bothered with my inability to fine the woman. I really will kill her when I find her. The consequences be damned along with her!

Incredible. While on my way back to the dwemer ruin this evening, I came across the body of Neloth's former steward. She was facedown in the ash, with no sign of combatants nearby. Judging from her wounds I would surmise it was an ash spawn attack, but I'm not one to care now. I was just delighted to find that she was dead, although I would have preferred to handle that detail myself.

The unfortunate result of her death is that Neloth would now like me to return to Raven Rock. After hiking back this evening to deliver the news of Varona's death, he bid me to return to the city and find a replacement steward. I can honestly say I'm growing quite weary of these meaningless tasks. He has yet to teach me anything of value. But I'll encourage my patience to hold a bit longer. Just a bit.

Speaking to the imbeciles in Raven Rock is worse than dealing with Neloth. Neloth is rude .. bursting with ego .. and cares nothing for those he tasks or employs. But at least he's intelligent and powerful and serves a purpose to himself. The dull inhabitants in this town should all put themselves in the grave already.

It's not surprising in the least that no one here has any interest in being Neloth's servant. I should have just raised up Varona's corpse and brought it back to Neloth. Although I'm certain he wouldn't have approved and I'd still find myself talking to the ignorant curs in this dirty town. It's likely to take some coercing and lying and persuading to convince anyone to come back with me.

The barkeep at the inn has provided the only glimmer of hope for me on this maddeningly-mundane task. His apprentice is short on coin, and could possibly be convinced to serve Neloth if the price was right. I'll speak to the apprentice in the morning. It was a long and dangerous journey here today, followed by hours upon hours of mental torture here in the city. Sleep will be a welcome escape.

Neloth is not entirely pleased with his new servant, but then again he's never entirely pleased with anything. The new servant required no convincing on my part. Quite odd, but it is none of my concern. This ridiculous errand is now at an end and Neloth has seen fit to reward me with access to his renowned stave enchanter.

The staff I have in mind will render Neloth .. and anyone else ... immobile. I have but to learn the spell now, and then learn how to apply it to the staff. It is unfortunate I still require Neloth's help in all of this, but I suppose in a way it's also ironic. His assistance will lead to his demise.

So glad you are still doing these. You have some of the best journals I've ever read.

Thanks! I always intended to come back to them, just gets hard to find the time sometimes. Things are going to be getting pretty interesting I think, though. d;-)

Back to doing Neloth's bidding. It's unbearable.

He has dispatched me back to Skyrim, charged with the task of locating a briarheart among the Forsworn. His understanding of their ritualistic practice .. of removing one's own heart and replacing it with briar .. is limited, and he believes a better understanding of it will help him with his research. Never mind that it requires me to venture into Forsworn territory. This won't be easy.

As much as I despise Neloth I do admire him. After all, it's not him on the this road heading into Forsworn territory. The man is a master of risking the lives of others. Fortunately for me, my life is not truly at risk. If only that foolish wizard knew.

I've only one minion companion with me now. The other disappeared overnight during the voyage from Raven Rock to Windhelm. I can only assume foul play of some kind, as there is no reason for one of my thrall to simply throw themselves overboard. I'll need to find a replacement soon if I'm to complete this task in a timely manner. I expected to find one on the road here, but so far I've encountered nothing but wild beasts.

Perhaps my replacement will be a Forsworn ...

I can't say I'm ever going to become accustomed to this ... coming back .. phenomenon. The pain of death can be excruciating, but returning to this world ... it's not painful ... it's just very uncomfortable. Difficult to put the experience into words still.

The living dead that follows me was my undoing this time. We encountered a simple wolf on the road, and my simple-minded slave .. who was trailing behind me .. thought it an acceptable tactic to cast a whirlwind of frost magic at the wolf. I'm sure it would have been quite effective against the mangy wolf, but I was in the path, and felt the icy sting first ... and then the world went black for a time.

I suppose it was a blessing in some ways, as I retraced my steps and encountered some bandits at a crossroads. I now have a second undead in my company.

That was a very clinical description. :D

I, personally, would have been more than a little miffed if my thrall had bounced a spell off my backside sending me yo-yoing into the nether realm and back. After I finished unmaking him I would have put choice words into my journal about his worth as a servant. But then, I lack the patience of one who has waited so long to achieve immortality. . .
