So entrenched in The Elder Scrolls have I become, since playing Skyrim, then Oblivion, that I now plan to buy an Xbox so I can experience Morrowind.

So be honest, why do I read so many negatives regarding combat mechanics? What's so bad about them? Is the game more suited to mages than melee fighters? What build would you choose to get the most out of the game? Or does it matter?

It should be noted, I started with 8 and 16 bit RPG's. Graphics not being cutting-edge won't phase me.

I am unsure how long it will take before I begin ranting about everything I love about Morrowind... Worst grammar ever, but it's true...

Ummm.... Well, first I should directly answer a few of your questions.

I honestly don't know why so many people dislike the combat system of Morrowind. It's crazy complicated and involves a large formula. I suspect the problem being: To your typical person, it is hard to imagine what's going on behind the scenes when the game simply says you missed. In my eyes, combat could not be any better. That said, it isn't at all like Oblivion or Skyrim. The game decides if you hit your opponent.

Both Melee and Magic oriented types become crazy mid to late game. It doesn't hurt to split between them, but obviously for RPing and such, you won't have a problem. What class would I choose specifically? I really enjoy Battle Mages honestly. This usually ends up drifting into an everything character because that is my main goal... One thing to note: In Morrowind, you can never truly do everything. And if you get close, you'll realize there was something you missed earlier and cannot do now. It is a truly remarkable quality, and that alone opens up hours and hours or replayability. I don't believe it really matters which class you choose, as long as it's your thing...

I am at least glad you're someone who isn't rattled by graphics. I've never found 'outdated' graphics to take away from immersion. After all, it's your brain that puts you there...

I don't know, Kohlar. There is a long list of treats in store for you. Unique weapons that are unique in design and effect. A myriad (not literally) or unique amulets and rings... The Necromancer Amulet out of Skyrim is literally the only item in Skyrim that lives up to what Morrowind set for the stage.

...people running after you screaming, "N'wah!" Oh, the memories.... I should stop here... Ask more questions if you'd like. I'm sure I'll be able to answer a few.

Cheers

Hhhmmm..................

So I drove 40 minutes to the Vintage Stock that had Morrowind Game of the Year edition on hand, then drove 50 minutes back the other way to buy a used xbox at a different Vintage Stock. I pop in Morrowind, and soon find out that my right trigger doesn't work. Turns out that's a pretty important button... So I just decided to forgo jumping, and switched right trigger control to left trigger. So after restarting because I unintentionally skipped the whole appearance portion of character creation, I was on my way. It soon became obvious how wimpy I was at that point, so I began to 'rest' frequently, to save. Well, after getting murdered by some little dinosaur thing, I loaded the last save. What eventually loaded, however, was not my save. It must've been from a prior save from the xbox's former owner, but the screen was completely gray, couldn't see a thing, other than the mini map, which was visible. Just uniform, blank, gray. I reloaded the save that has my characters name, and it loads up this other save. That's what I get when I attempt to load my character. Somebody's prior save. Everytime. So now, I guess I'll restart again...

This is my first experience with an xbox, (I laughed when I saw the machine, as it's literally an 'X' BOX!), is this typical? I'm thinking tomorrow, I'll exchange the machine. Of course I'll then have to restart yet again..

Is that typical? ...Well, whenever I've purchased a used console, I delete any info on it first. I am curious why you bought an Original for Morrowind. 360s are backwards compatible...

I do like your story so far. Please tell us how you manage to avoid being slaughtered by your first Mudcrab. That's always a big benchmark whenever I start anew. Them and Foragers. Things are just crazy scary at level one.

edit: Honestly I wouldn't worry about exchanging the thing yet. Get rid of the old save data and see how she purrs. As long as she boots up, doesn't make any unnecessary racket, and reads the game, she should be healthy and clean. The only real problem that's probably something you won't notice until farther in, is if the CPU has had significant strain. I have great appreciation for the Originals, but they aren't master computers. With enough neglect and mistreatment they'll show their age.

I exchanged the controller but not the machine. Everything seems to be working fine.

Restarted this evening, so I really haven't done much. I'm getting into it though. I enjoy the enviroments, and the graphics in general are well done, actually; faces are superior to those in Oblivion. One of the most impressive features is the soundtrack, (**following is a minor spoiler if you've never played the Dragonbord DLC on Skyrim**), the music that plays while traveling through Solstheim in Skyrim, is the very same music thats played in Morrowind. This ties the two games together brilliantly, and made Morrowind feel instantly familiar. And I love the title theme, in which can be heared echoes of Skyrim's title theme. So, playing Morrowind is having the desired effect, that effect being that I will better appreciate Skyrim and subsequent Elder Scrolls games, by being aware of the way they all tie together. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this series!

I reached the city of Vivec today. The place is gargantuan, and difficult to navigate do to the near exact exterior architecture of each block, but impressive all the same. The environs continue to impress. The THUNDERSTORMS!! They don't make storms like that in Skyrim. The sudden blinding lightning flashes have made me jump a couple times. The one Dwemer Dungeon that I've been into had me on edge because of the constant groaning/strained metal sounds emitted from the walls. Advancement seems to happen very slowly in this game, looking forward to getting a good sword and some decent spells. I'm still pretty weak, (at level 3, of course I am!), and just about everyone seems to hate me!

I can see by looking at the map that came with the game, that many of the same locations are present on Solstheim that are there in Skyrim. Really looking forward to getting there and visiting past versions of familiar locations.

Totally forgot this place existed. Okay!

Vivec is quite the place. Go North for the Foreign Quarter, go South for the High Fane. Everything in misled the middle is just trial and error. I had, once upon a time, tried to memorize it... I think St. Olms is my favourite Canton. Lots of friendly people and... yea, no one is friendly in Morrowind. You're an Outsider, man! A Foreigner!

The Dwemer ruins are very immersive. The look, sound, atmosphere, it's all very entrancing. Just wait until you're able to breach the Dunmer Strongholds. I am still dead scared of a couple of them... They're just that real.

You've probably already happened on the Mages Guild. One fine point in Morrowind is, everyone carries a different spell set. As trivial as it may sound, some of my favourite times was running around trying to find a particular spell. Some of the dull things really get my jollies for some reason... And the names! Oh, goodness! People have names! Skink-In-Trees-Shade... Yes!

Hope all goes well on your journey to Solstheim. I do expect you will be very surprised by some of the happenings there.
