It's just not fair to a pure mage!

How do you backstab a Dragon?
My poor Den Moria. Just started the college questline and the first book retrieval turns out to be in Broken Oar Grotto! Good grief! No way! Den is just, in no way, prepared to deal with Broken Oar at this level.

It's like tackling Mistwatch at level 2 or something. Sheesh.

Oh well, on to Ingin Thorne the spellsword, at least she can kick some butt and doesn't have to rely only on magic. :)

Damn, that sucks. Pure mages have it hard, especially in the beginning.

When in doubt, follow the fox.
I can never play pure mage until about level 55 or so. Seriously, you get up to expert level destruction and you get 90 damage per strike with incinerate et al? WTF!! Level up Alchemy to increase damage by 203% (this is what I have currently) and you're still nowhere near what a sword or a bow can do. By level 55 or so (maybe even 65) I can go pure mage because I have dragonscale armor with associated perks, lots of health, and alchemically supercharged spells that cost nearly nothing. THEN I can play with draugr and bandits by firing at them for like, 5 minutes per to kill them, without fear of death. Even then its good to have a follower to run interference while you're slowly battering away at their life line. Speaking of which, your pure mage should go get Barbas. He's great for keeping the bad guys busy.

Pure mages are difficult to play on higher difficulties. Destruction is incredibly underpowered, even when dual casting Incinerate with both ranks of Augmented Flames. I don't think it's necessarily meant to be a primary skill, though. The damages really begins to add up once you have two conjured minions out on the field, as well as any fortifying potions that you may have.

You can't deny that Lightning Storm is a beautiful spell, though. KAMEHAMEHAAAAA!

I find pure mages damn near impossible to play without a few mods to balance the skill trees. Console players, I feel you.

And speaking of being unprepared for a job, on one of my playthroughs my character had joined the companions very early on. His "test" was to clear out Shimmermist cave.... he was level 5. I stubbornly decided I could do it if I was careful enough and spammed the quicksave button. Needless to say, I was wrong. I think everyone knows how nasty falmer can be, regardless of your level. And at the end of the cave (don't know how I even made it that far) there was a dwarven centurion waiting for me. I was like nope, see ya. The companions can suck it.

Novice difficulty a follower and a summoned antronach was the only way I made it through when they did that to me. Jerks!

Sounds to me like the companions were having a bit of a laugh at your expense. . .
