After the Riften guards incarcerate him during the "A Chance Arrangement" quest, does he remain in jail indefinitely? I think Brynjolf said that he will learn his lesson after a few days in prison, but he has been in there for at least a week and he's still not out. I'm asking since I'm lamenting the loss of a good multi-purpose merchant from the marketplace.
EASY FIX: Pick his door, open it, type the following in the console: "set tg00brandsheijail to 0" Wait 3 hours, your done!

I botch the job too. Riften iz my home, having that extra merchant to get rid of my junk comes in handy. Plus the back door entrance keeps those pesky vampires from decimating the town.

You know I always wondered about him from time to time. I never bothered to visit him in jail or anything. Though I am glad there is a console command that will let me free him. For a second there I was going to just restart my character and fail this quest. But I tend to try and make a good impression on Brynjollf. Don't want thim thinking I am part of the common rabble after all!

I always fail this quest yet it comes up completed in the journal, which is nice. Brand-Shei is cool and the thought of him in prison for doing nothing is silly. Stealing mere possessions from people is one thing but stealing time from their life didn't mesh with the Thieves Guild for me.

I did not realize you could botch the job so I had to reload and fail it. As ambiiientz said Riften is my home and the more merchants the better.

I sorta wish I had botched that quest too.. I almost feel badly for Brand-Shei, mostly because I still have the quest in my log to find out about his past, whatever that means. I hope I can still do the quest for him while he's incarcerated.

You can, and to be honest, he seems more than happy in jail. And what kind of adventurer purposely botches a quest? You guys shouldn't even apply to the thieve's guild! :) If he had any spine he would have gone out there trying to find his own heritage, darned Dunmer!

In one of my earlier playthroughs, he was released after a while but with my more recent games he does seem to stay there permanently. May have been something screwed up during an update I suppose. The Riften market area is great for selling gear and having an additional merchant there always helps so I prefer to have him stay of course. When it comes to finding Esbern, I just beat up on Dirge to proceed through the quest instead of going through Brynjolf.

I actually liked Brand-Shei, so this kinda irritates me. Could you perhaps break him out?
I tried that but sadly he seems to just stand there and acts like he is still behind bars. At least he wasn't turned to ashes by a vampire attack on your file though .

I always immediately do this quest, so I don't even know what Brand-Shei sells at his store. I guess I just do it and move on, I mean at least you aren't killing him like you do with the Dark Brotherhood all the time especially when you have to choose to kill one or more of three randomly captured people, so at least the thieves guild has their rule about not killing people.

If he isn't essential kill him and thrall him.

On one PC playthrough, I ended up trying to spring him from prison just o have him stand there, so I stealth fully killed him and console spawned him in the marketplace

How do you backstab a Dragon?
Yeah, I was wondering this very same thing. It's why I initially avoided Brynjolf for so long and was sorta irritated with him for a bit. I'd just completed Brand-Shei's favor mission and enjoyed his character, so I was loathe to do anything against him. Brynjolf's charms eventually prevailed and I did the mission in my second file. But I'm regretting not just botching it, especially if there's no way that he'll be leaving jail.

Can you botch it and still get into the guild? If so, that's what I'll do on my next playthrough.
Absolutely. Apparently their so desperate, they'll take anyone. They took my 2 handed, non-sneak, heavy armor warrior and never a peep out of any of them. Sure, I didn't make any money, but the adventure was cool. Of course, I was always broke 'cause I was paying off bounties, right and left. Still...
