Depends how I'm feeling on that character. I don't blame the Blades giving me their demand, as much as people want to complain about them "serving" you. They don't serve you, the Blades served the Dragonborn Emperors. They're going back to being Dragonguard and not once do they ever actually swear an oath to you.

"You serve me Blades!"

"When did we say that?"

"That time at... When you uh.. Around the.. Shut up with your Akaviri logic!"

Greybeards. I'm too (personally) attached to Paarthurnax. The Blades kind of annoy me anyway, despite some of the benefits offered.

Yeah I chose to not kill Paathurnax on my first Playthrough since he's such a laid back dragon with knowledge and Greybeards have Macho Moustaches which is the only reason you need to respect them.

Also Delphine doesn't really justify the reason for killing the dragon besides some petty historic rivalry which my orc didn't understand, he was just picking his nose while she yapped on in Sky Haven Temple. My Orc then went up to Esbern and called him a miserable dragon hating old fart, Esbern being deaf luckily knew none the wiser "Huh, Did you say something? You'll have to speak up I'm a little deaf in my right ear."

Blades power hungry when they don't need 2 be, Greybeards and the funky Dragon get my vote.

I only killed Parthurnaax once, and that was just because Lydia (accidentally?) shot him during the Alduin battle, turning him hostile. I'll admit, twas good entertainment hunting dragons with a bunch of followers, each doing there own thing.

Although I like Esbern, he and Delphine make a feeble duo. Must I do everything for them? Why can't they be a bit proactive and recruit some followers of their own? And if they want Parthurnaax dead so badly, they can do the deed themselves, the bloody cowards.

Latest playthrough: I'd done the Civil War questline before the main quest for the first time, so Balgruuf agreed to help me trap the dragon right off and I went to ask the Blades to help me call a dragon. I avoided Delphine and talked to Esbern and this is how it went:

Esbern: I've discovered something dreadful! Paarthurnax is the leader of the Greybeards! He committed dreadful atrocities when he was Alduin's lieutenant. You have to kill him. I'm sorry, but until he's dead my oath as a Blade prevents me from offering you aid or comfort.
Me: Umm...okay. So anyway, I need your aid. I need to call a dragon to Dragonsreach so I can trap it and find out where Alduin went.
Esbern: Oh sure, I can aid you with that. I'm going to spend the next five minutes explaining who Odahviing is and why he'll come when you call him.
Me: Thanks Esbern.

I guess that Blade oath is a pretty flexible thing.

I chose to side with the grey beards with my first couple of play throughs. Then my last character I chose the blades seeking justice for all the dragon atrocities down through the ages. Parthanax aided in taking down Alduin but his statements led me to believe he may just try and take Alduins place. So to protect Skyrim from the dragons Parthanax had to die. However I do prefer the Greybeards. I do wish you could become one. But I suppose r hat wouldn't make sense since they are peaceful and the dragon born isn't. Could be cool to retire a character as one though.

On my first playthrough after slaying Alduin I went to see both factions and let them know I've succeeded. I had to clear the whole goddamn Karthspire all over just to get to Delphine and Esbern, and when I finally found them standing outside Sky Haven Temple all I got was "That's great and all but you didn't kill Paarthunax so go fl*ff yourself". So I Fus Ro Dah'd them both off the cliff and didn't bother with them ever again

Except they don't die from cliffside falls because they are invincible, so you look down below and Esbern is stuck swimming with mudcrabs while Delphine is shocked by the power of the Dragonborn.

Happened to me once as well but instead of killing Paarthunax I shouted Lydia from the mountain (I do that a lot). I found her down near Ivarstead later on. She was completely fine, as we know gravity means little in Skyrim.

My first playthrough I'd gotten the Paarthurnax ultimatum in Season Unending, but I thought: "Surely now I've killed Alduin and saved the world they'll be pleased and relent." Pleased yes, relent, no. Sometimes it's hard to know what is worse, when the Dragonborn gets no appreciation or when they dragonborn does get appreciation.

The Blades need you. Without you, they are hopeless. Yet they are arrogant enough to use you as an errand boy, telling you what to do all the time. And they refuse to work together with you if you don't kill this dragon they don't like. Well, fluff them I'd say. The Greybeards aren't stupid. They would never trust a random dragon who could cause issues at some point. Paathurnax risked his life by rebelling against the dragons during the war, and he is a useful ally on their side. I always side with Paathurnax. I am not sensitive to manipulation. ;)

I don't usually side with either since I just end up killing everyone at the end of my playthroughs anyway. Impulse is too great.

Essential characters? Nah. I think the proper term is brutally maimed characters. :p

I dislike delphine and i dislike esbern, i recruited three members to the blades, an orc from a stronghold southeast of markarth, kharjo a khajiit who follows other khajiits in a caravan, and frea from skaal village in solstheim.
but if u notice esbern is a bit douchy, everytime i get close to him he says ( u gotta speak a bit louder i'm deaf from my right ear ) which is a common thing in skyrim even to the main character, u cant ear what's going on from your right side, and that's also a way to insult the orc guard who locks u up in cidna mine when you're doing the forsworn quest, so i always saw that comment as an insult and even though esbern is old and he could have earing problems i still cant get over that fact. plus they want paarthumax dead and i felt that he redeemed himself long ago and i forgived paarthumax, if the blades cant forgive them that's their own fault, i got esbern's potion which grants me 25% less damage from dragon bites on me and that's awesome, anything else is just bs. i'm sticking to my buddy paarthumax.

I choose The Bleybeards - Greybeards in Blades armour who teach you dragon tongue then help you betray their kin.

A.k.a The Greydes

Hmm, when you ask Delphine who she is, she says:
"I'm one of the last members of the Blades. A very long time ago, the Blades were dragonslayers, and we served the Dragonborn, the greatest dragonslayer. For the last two hundred years, since the last Dragonborn emperor, the Blades have been searching for a purpose. Now that dragons are coming back, our purpose is clear again. We need to stop them."

Well... If I remember my lore correctly, the Dragonborn were the emperors on the whole, but, then again, I can only go by what I experienced and heard in Oblivion. I could be wrong. Maybe she simply uses Dragonborn to refer to the Septim line that they served, not everybody that was ever Dragonborn?

Hmm...

Yeah, I was looking around UESP and they do seem to be sworn to the emperor and the emperor only. My mistake. Delphine could've been a bit more specific though -.-
