I am wondering which race I should pick to start my journey in skyrim. I would like to play sword/shield and bow with light armor. I also would like to have the ability to be stealthy when needed but I also want to be able to handle my own in combat. Any help?

Wood elf or imperial would work for what you've described. Imperial has a racial ability that can be very helpful at lower levels (voice of the emperor).

Don't sweat your race choice too much though, unless it's for roleplay reasons. Once you start leveling your selected skills, any race can capably play any role.

Skyrim is kinda like Dark Souls in it's character creation. In the beginning you may have a slight advantage with each type of character (i.e some races start with slightly higher magic levels while others start with better warrior levels), but in the end you can make whatever character that you want and those advantages quickly become redundant. Go with whatever race you feel looks the coolest and then go with whatever build you wish to make.

Great advice.

To topic creator - don't sweat it, pick a race you want to try, its your story, Skyrim wikia has useful info on specific races and their starting strengths. But know that even if you picked a High elf whos strong magickwise - you could still turn him into a melee tanking beast by later levels. Ur first try, just enjoy it as much as u can.

Like has been mentioned above, in Skyrim your character's race makes next to no difference skill-wise. Racial abilities and/or resistances plus the Altmer's +50 magicka are much more significant things than those meager +5 or +10 starting skill bonuses.
You can create an Altmer heavy armour + 2-H warrior, an Orc thief/assassin or a Khajiit mage if you want to. Atypical character builds can in fact be the most fun to play.
