Hey everyone! I was working on the "A Deadra's Best Friend" and lo and behold, after I took care of some pesty bandits, Barbas was gone. Without so much as wave goodbye he wandered off into oblivion...well...Skyrim (HA). I guess I am going to have to find Haemer's Shame on my own but the question is will Barbas be there? I am pretty sure I can't finish the quest without him.

Thoughts? Comments? Witty one liners?

You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.
Yeah, dogs don't usually wait around, FrostedPink. Male dogs especially, ahem. When you were first doing the quest, did he at times wander off without you, or just lie down for no reason? Yep, we do that. Um, male dogs do that. Dang, I hate these faulty keyboards! But anyway, if you can find him again, please do so. Cuz you will need him to complete the quest. Possible reload? If that's too drastic, just go on your merry way, and hopefully he'll show up eventually.

Those male dogs!! ::shake my fist:: Meh, too late for a reload, I searched around for about an hour and discovered tons of different areas to pillage and plunder. Too bad for him, he missed out on the loot! I figure when he gets tired of being alone he will show up again one day :pinkdragon:

That is a know "bug" for that quest.

Try to follow the quest marker to find him.

I usually choose NOT to follow him (postponing his request), and get to Haemar's shame on my own. This way Barbas goes there on his own.

Dogs are all the same. Just find a nearby pile of poo and wait. The dog will come along and try to eat it before long.

Of all things, it is odd that there is a lack of poo in Skyrim. Giant Toe? Check. Charred Skeever? Check. The worlds most natural creation that cannot be ignored even in a virtual world? Uhh...no check. Not only would it bring the dog back, but also add a little something extra to my potions. Hee Hee.

Ever wondered what all the buckets in skyrim are for? and why they have one to two buckets in every skyrim household?

I know what the buckets are for, but was quite surprised to find no poop in there! *Not that I have an obsession with poop or anything!* Just an observation :)

Can't believe that you lost Barbas and was surprised to read that his wandering is a known issue... I had him follow me around for a few days. He was nearly ALWAYS right up my characters caboose. His invincibility came in handy while I got my destruction up. I've seen him kill both a giant and dragon. Him & Lydia got into a fight once in some cave & I had to reload. He accepted Lydia's yield so he didn't kill her, but she refused to stop attacking him. If I don't see Lydia for a while, I wonder if something killed her (not likely but possible), if I didn't see Barbas for a while - I wondered what he may have killed. His benefits barely outweighed his annoyances. He bumped me all the time. He shoved me off a few cliffs. He constantly nudged me too close to bandits when I was sneaking as I readied my bow. More than once, he bumped me as I was talking to vendors and the little "x" target that was aligned for "talk to...", ended up getting moved just enough to steal something on accident. Lydia often traps me in a room, or where I can't turn around in a narrow hall - Barbas just made it worse. You can't tell Barbas to "wait here" like most followers (even Meeko and the stray dog) & he knocked over stuff in the houses ALL THE TIME. If that wasn't enough, he barked non-stop. That sound, even though not literally heard in about two weeks - is burned into my soul forever. I had to send him home, I just couldn't stand the barking and constant nudging. I read up and found that if I ever want to spend more time with him, like to finish the quest - I will have to go to the shrine to reunite with him.

He did get "lost" a few times, and I found that he was actually just "stuck" - ramming his little body & head into some small ledge/step or stuck behind a pot. Loading another area usually helped, but I do recall at least once that it didn't. Did you back-step and check where you saw him last? I wonder if he is like most followers - where he may just go back to his "home" (shrine) after 3 days? My gut says no, because he isn't "waiting". Did you check the shrine just for fun? May be you nerves took over just long enough to dismiss him ;). I bet he's somewhere...I really did loose him in a dwemer ruin once and he was just air-walking into a wall or something. I thought I'd have to reload, I always check to make sure my follower(s) is/are with me when it loads a new area so I had fairly prompt notice that he was MIA. Oh! Another time he didn't follow through a loading screen, he was very stuck in a falmer tent-thing. I don't think he knows how to turn around. Sounds like you've been all over the place since the last sighting so it could be pretty hard to find him...

Good luck!

So tell me, when was the last time you hugged your male dog? Huh? Huh? See? There you go. ;) :D

Are you going for the daedric artifact achievement? Because the artifact isnt that great anyway...

Yeah, that's the one. I am glad to hear it's not that great, but my lust for putting check marks on the checklist makes me tremble at the thought of an unfinished quest! The horror! I guess I will have to let this one go.

In the OP's situation she hadn't visited Haemar's Shame with Barbas yet. He only follows you around after that. Before that you have to follow him, or simply catch up with him later. The OP can find him at Haemar's Shame. Even if the quest marker is broken, she can discover it simply by traveling the roads of Falkreath Hold.

It was a reference to Courage the Cowardly dog.. am I the only one who remembers that show?

Yes, I think so. :) But then again, it all depends on age! I am of the 25 and up crowd...does that make a difference?
