I can never get far in any of the crafting skills. No matter how much I roleplay I just can't see it as anything other than grinding.
Like most people have mentioned, pickpocketing is another one. Though I'd love to try the trick where you kill a briar heart by pickpocketing it.
All the offensive magic schools. I'll use illusion, alteration, and restoration. But the offensive schools just aren't as satisfying as a greatsword or bow and arrows.
Heavy armor. When I make warriors, they're hairy barbarians, not a tin men.

Magic in general. I have close to 800 hours now, and have never taken a magic character above level 10, and even then, I've only tried it once.

I'm finding it difficult to keep leveling my sneak archer right now, I even legendized sneak. I might have to go with illusion or something just so I don't have to go legendary with one of my other main skills.

I agree. It's pretty hard for me to do a magic-only or mainly magic user. By level 10, I wind up reverting to the sneaky archer who only uses magic when it's absolutely necessary, and even then, I only touch destruction, and maybe some restoration and conjuration; alteration I found to be useless for the most part, and illusion just seems like a big pain in the ass to level up to the point of actually doing something,

Illusion's tough because you really have to stay on top of the perks in order for it to work on your current level. It's probably the second-easiest skill in the (vanilla) game to level though, since Muffle boosts it by a huge amount each cast, even out of combat.

I've actually never gotten destruction even to 50 on any character. I just can't get into the destruction mage archetype. I like magic users, but usually stick to Illusionist, Conjurer, or the like.

I'm not big into pickpocketing, actually. I usually focus on archery, alchemy, lockpicking, stuff like that. Usually the schools of magic get little attention from me too, since I generally dislike magic in Skyrim, except destruction and conjuration.

-snip- I generally dislike magic in Skyrim, except destruction and conjuration.

I'm the same - except Destruction and Conjuration are the two schools I use/like the least. :p

I have a feeling I'm going to be using magic in my next "playthrough" (will probably reroll within a week... as usual), because I have installed SkyRe again, and it has some really cool spells. "Weaken Gravity" (Alteration) and "Insight" (Illusion) in particular will get a LOT of use once I find/buy/get the spell tomes. :D

I rarely, if ever, use alchemy, never got the hang of it. Same for putting points into Speech, Lockpicking, and Pickpocket. I rolled a mage that I really liked. I made enchanting legendary 3 times, conjuration and archery 2 times. That was one of my most enjoyable characters. Might have to fire the PS3 back up and finish off miraak.

The rest of the skills I have used at one time or another. I don't use 2H very often, nor Light Armor, The steed stone makes LA kinda useless to me. Block, meh, not for a while. I agree with alteration and illusion as pretty useless skills, as they seem to rarely work, at least for me. To me, illusion is worthless, except for the quiet casting perk, which is about all I use that skill for.

I never use alchemy. Not really a fan of it.. plus I've just never really gotten into it.

And hitting me, just makes me mad.

Alchemy's a tough one to get into. You have to really dedicate yourself to being alchemy primary: make sure it stays as your highest skill, perk it up, collect ingredients constantly, make potions focusing on high yield buffs and poisons, and most importantly, actually USE the potions in every single battle. For an occasional user, potions you find and buy are generally better than ones you make, and if you training/perking it with tertiary priority, you'll have long since outgrown the potions/poisons by the time you make good ones. The same goes for Illusion, to a slightly lesser extent.

However, if you dedicate yourself to them, they are rewarding ways to experience a different style of gameplay.

I saw a video of someone using the level 100 knocking opponents down with a raised shield while running, man that looks OP as hell. That looks like pure fun. He took on a whole town guard of Solitude and ran threw them like they were bowling pins, it was hilarious. It ragdolls them. I haven't done it myself.

I'm guessing people don't play on super high difficulties with double damage combat mods, because in my version of Skyrim, I have no choice but to utilize a shield for the first 50-60 levels, a lot of the two handed weapons are automatic one hit kills for me without a shield to block it, usually I have to hold out til Lydia takes them on. Everything kills me too easily. I'm level 33 Breton on Legendary with Deadly Combat mod (doubles the damage I think of everything and halves the armor rating of your gear, plus the Legendary 300% greater enemy damage) and a Bandit Marauder is a one shot kill arrow as it sits now. I recently tried starting a fight with the WhiteRun guard and their archers either killed me, or took me down to a sliver of health with 2 arrows, those are just steel with an imperial bow. So the shield is an absolute must in any combat situation, I mostly rely on Lydia to do most of the fighting until I get my fully smithed and enchanted Ebony Armor.

Alchemy skill is based off the value of the potions you make. It's IMO one of the easiest to level up, on my current playthrough, I went from level 20 Alchemy to level 55 in a single potion mixing session. Theres a list on this site for Skyrims most valuable potions, and then theres another one on UESP wiki that will give you a list of most valuable potions. I actually do believe there might be a potion more valuable than Giant's Toe, Wheat and Creep Cluster, I think it uses Giant's Toe and Hanging moss, and a 3rd ingredient.

The easiest most valuable ingredients to find and level up alchemy, if you're not raiding every giant camp for giant's toes as well as stealing them (there's also 4 in Windhelm, Calixto's House of Curiousities and that mage in the castle)

I think it's Butterfly Wing, Hanging Moss and Blue Mountain flower, its one with the easiest ingredients to find in abundance and makes a very valuable potion. Blue Butterfly Wing and Blue Mountain Flower also makes a pretty valuable potion.

Basically when I'm out and about I never pass up Blue Mountain Flower and I never pass up Hanging moss, you can usually find those 2 ingredients in abundance (Blue Mountain Flower all over the place) and hanging moss in specific areas of Skyrim is always in great abundance, usually in the Reach, Solitude Crypt, and there's quite a bit at Eldergleam Sanctuary. I've collected so many butterfly wings at this point though that I don't really collect them anymore.

Also Dragon's Tonque and Fly Amanita makes a decent potion for leveling up Alchemy, and if you add Troll fat, even more so. Anything from a Hagraven, feathers or claws is good for making expensive potions but those ingredients tend to be hard to find. I think Taproot, Deathbell and Salt Pile makes a pricey potion.

Also your best poisons and potions are ones you craft yourself, assuming you're using the Falmer Helmet Glitch. When I get around to joining the Dark Brotherhood, something I've never done in 2 1/2 years of owning this game, I'm going to make some really powerful poisons. Never pass up Impstool, it's a key ingredient in all powerful poisons.

Really though if you want to know how to make a lot of use of the alchemy skill, use google, there are a lot of people who have experimented around with ingredients to figure out what makes a really powerful potion/poison and you can go from there.

as a side note, with my massive inventory of super valuable potions, I had to get the Trade and Barter Mod, as well as expensive investments mod so I wasn't so filthy rich for the whole game and money still had some kind of meaning. One of these days in my build, I'm gonna hit up the College of Winterhold and buy every spell at outrageous 20:1 Trade and Bart prices.

Also if you sell each potion individually, you'll level up speech really fast. Make sure you exit out of the barter dialogue and reenter after each time you level up. Speech is one of the fastest skills for me to level up with my method. Throw in a blessing of dibella and gift of charity too if you can, I'm still looking for that Amulet of Zenithar without hitting up the one in Riften.

Luckily with my play-style, I haven't found anything immune to having its head bashed in, stabbed or slashed.

You forgot to summon two DL, Atronachs, or two Flame/Frost/Storm Thralls.......that makes things easier.... :D

I dont use pickpocket at all. There are a lot of skills i don't level up actually. I've only actually played a few characters so haven't experimented much with varying skills. I have discovered though that if you do want to level up higher levels you have to start using some unused skills cause it takes too long to level up using your standard hack and slash skills. My current character has started using a shield in order to gain some blocking skills. It does help,in leveling up. I also started using some other magic for the same reason. I really want my current character t i reach max level.

I'm the same way. Sometimes I'll sneak up on someone (which helps level that skill) and then pickpocket them for no reason other than to level that skill. If they catch me; the melee is on! If they don't, well....they get their throat slit. :)

I don't use any crafting things, and if i do i don't put points to any crafting skill, like enchanting, smithing or tailory. I don't like multifunctional characters like me xD and are out of realism imo
In example: if i'm roleplaying a hunter, the best u can craft are bows and arrows to simulate the "expertise" like the mantainance of a bow, but definitely not crafting armors or jewelry. If you are good with motors-mechanics, try to take care of a greenhouse...or tailor your own dresses.
And just about crafting dresses and armours, my mom is used to sew stuff, to make a dress she spend at least 3 days, the dragonborn do this in 1 millisecond, hehe.

What i find in dungeons/loots is enough.

PS: I never get an OP character in my life.
