Mister Freeze
I made a Breton spell-sword last night. I try to give Bretons Welsh sounding names (generally stemming from my love of the Prydain Chronicles). I accidentally stumbled on a real name. I named him Merwynn, kind of going for something close but not too close to Merlin.

I just looked it up and found that it was a name of some Welsh king. Means "friend of the sea". Pretty happy with this one.

Why do you equate Bretons w/the Welsh? I always thought of them as more along the lines of the French.

Hailing from France perhaps, but with English origins. And I find the Welsh more compelling then the French.

Under the "Real-World Connections" section.

Bretons hail from Brittany, France, and along with their close cultural relatives the Cornish and Welsh, speak a language derived from the Brythonic branch of the Celtic languages. In the later Elder Scrolls games; Bretons usually sport Gallic names which can be directly correlated to this real-world ethnic group. However, an exception would be in regards to ESII: Daggerfall in which many British-sounding names are used when referencing this race of humans. This may have been done due to the fact that the many of the Bretons were once inhabitants of the eastern portions of modern day England driven out during the Saxon invasions later to recolonise parts of modern Wales and Cornwall. "Breton" is a modern term used to describe the people of Brittany. The Romans (Imperials) often referred to the Celtic people of ancient Albion (modern day Great Britain) as Britons, and made little internal distinction between the Brythonic (Pictish and Brittonic, later divided into the Cumbric, Breton, Cornish and Welsh languages) and the Goidelic (today represented by Irish, Gaelic, and Manx) peoples.

The Romans also referred to modern-day France as "Celtica," and used the terms "Gallic" and "Celtic" interchangeably. The word "Kelt" or "Keltoi" was originally Greek, and meant "stranger" or "outsider."

The Celtic cultures--first evinced archaeologically in "The Hallstatt Culture," appears to have developed in the Vienna basin spreading throughout Western Europe some time between 8th to 6th centuries BCE (early Iron Age). Also of significance was the La Tene culture that developed in the area of modern Switzerland from circa 450 to the 1st century BCE. These cultures dominated Europe and could be found as far east as Turkey (the New Testament "Epistle to the Galatians" reflects as much ("Galatian" is cognate with "Gaul").

It should also be noted that Forsworn characters have Pictish names.

Well, yeah. You know those French. :)

BTW - this is an ethnographic lesson that I found interesting indeed! And that's not being sarcastic. I'm a well educated person, but this is something I never knew.

Thank you!

A little while ago I decided to scrap my warrior Khajiit Do'isa and make a Khajiit thief instead. I named her Gypsy Amaris, which translates to "wanderer child of the moon". It was partly inspired by Khajiits being based off of gypsies - you know with the caravans and all. And also I had read about their connection to the moon - how they look different depending on where the moon(s) are in the sky. So it seemed fitting.

That's cool.

I actually named my cat 'Gypsy' though her name was actually a Mystery Science Theater 3000 reference

Now I have a new character (Nord again!) and I named her Sodapop from The Outsiders. I am OBSESSED with that book

Barenziah on my Redguard, Breton, and Imperial (None of them are Dunmer, I know) because I've been obsessed with the Biography and Real Barenziah collection and just Barenziah herself ever since I read the books in TES: Oblivion :D

My Altmer mage is named Chu'lak which is Vulcan for "one who has command of language". Even gave him the slanty eyebrows. I've also got a Breton assassin named Harley Quinn. She wears the jester outfit of course lol

My Orc was supposed to be called something like Yorgul, Grog, or something like that, but my game crashed just after I got past the face creation (THANKFULLY it autosaved, after spending like 30 mins on his face)

But the game started and I was forced to accept him as "Prisoner" LMFAO

Are you playing on PS3, Xbox 360 or PC?

I started a High Elf I'm calling Darkling.

The story behind it is when she was young she got Thralled by a vampire who kept her around for years as a convenient blood source and servant. He called her: "his little Darkling" because of her dark hair and eyes (unusual for an Altmer). Darkling doesn't remember her birth name or very much else about her pre-Thrall life on account of years of having her brains scrambled by vampire seduction, so when he got himself killed and she managed to break her mind free of his hold she just kept using the name Darkling.

I'm on Xbox 360 so I play original Vanilla game, try to avoid as much self overpowering as possible, and only recently did I actually start travelling on foot again (I go through phases where im doing loads of quests, usually dungeon dives) and then I get a bit adventure thirsty, and try to find some new random encounters or interesting places with tough mages. Always on the hunt for a powerful mage thrall!

I'd love to have it on PC and experiment with the mods, they look cool.

Some ppl I can see get really deep into roleplay aspect haha, I think I did at one point, but I made a mess of all my cool roleplays, stat wise, that the dullness of going through the start again made me lose my current characters backstory!

I think I'll go with, My Orc likes thieving, doesn't speak to fellow tribes because he's anti-social, and has fits of rage before thinking which gets him into trouble, or at the start of the game's case - captured because he just "happened" to be caught trying to steal food from an empire carriage.

When I make a new character I alway just start making noises with my mouth till it makes a name, sometimes it works pretty well.
A nord named Dorin and a wood elf named Lokiri just to name a couple.

Ahh okay... on PC you can go back into the Race Creation menu and change your characters name with console commands.

Other than my main character listed above, my secondary ones typically get named following lore conventions of the particular race.

My Bosmer was named following the conventions used in Arena and Daggerfall and picking a combo I thought sounded cool. I ended up with Karolas Riverwind.

My Orc was based off Orcish lore names and then mix and matching again until I liked something, Khagra gro-Marzish.

My evil, murder-loving Nord character's first name was off the Nord lore names list (Drennen) and then I made up a hyphenated last name (Death-Scythe) to be representative of his love of killing in sort of an angel/god of death kind of way

I usually play a Breton named Artherion.

Spellsword and all, the name reminds me of King Arthur and Sinderion the Elf from Oblivion who was actually pretty kool.
