Such a sad life

I will admit, when tested with the apparitions, I try to fit two Greybeards into the blast zone. But other than that I generally leave them alone.

How do you backstab a Dragon?

Once, and only once did I piss them off. I don't care if I'm Dragon Born, there is no way I could have withstood the force of those 4. Sheesh, the blew me so far off the mountain I landed in Markarth!

They're naive, they deserve it :p The "way of the voice" was made up by some stubborn nord who put a battle loss down to the God's rather than admitting he just lost. If Skyrim still had Tongue's, the Thalmor wouldn't stand a chance.

I tend to agree. Even when I first played through the game I asked myself why they were sitting around moping when they have trained for years to master such a fantastic gift. They have the ear of many leaders throughout the region, as well as their respect. Why not at least be a voice (no pun intended) of reason throughout the holds?

Because power corrupts. They have immense power. By removing themselves from the affairs of the world they attempt to stave off that corruption. I think it is like in the Lord of the Rings where the wisest refuse the ring even though it is offered to them. They understand that, even with the best intentions, that much power would inevitably lead to destruction.

However, there is a time to act even if reluctant to do so. I believe they missed that time to their discredit.

Their power can't be that immense, I'm the freaking Dragonborn and I get killed by lots of stuff. I've always thought of them not as those with superior power than others (I mean, Ulfric has the power of the voice but is far from overwhelmingly powerful), but as those who seek superior knowledge, and it's that knowledge I believe could benefit those on Nirn, not the fact that they can yell louder.

I always felt more sorry for the Greybeards because they spend years and years on that mountain learning a couple of shouts, then the Dragonborn appears, learns everything they know in about half a day then disappears to learn a bunch more shouts, only returning to make them point out places for new shouts and to make them do things they find highly unpleasant, like learn Dragonrend and host a peace conference with some of the most dislikable people in Skyrim.

The ingame depiction of the voice is minimal compared to the lore version. Read up a bit and you will see that ancient tonuges were unbeatable, Skyrim had no need for siege equipment when one men would just shout down the gate.

Onetime my vampire character was being chased by some Dawnguard. I went into their temple and they followed. The moment they attacked me I was awestruck as the Greybeards shouted them apart. They didn't last more than a few seconds! Sometimes I get the talos blessing and use the talos amulet at the same time, but I want to be able to shout like them.

Maybe the greybreads go on sabbaticals ;)

I've never mistreated the Greybeards; why should I?
I even do the "Demonstrate your Unrelenting Force Shout" standing between Masters Einarth and Borri, so that my Shout won't throw the pots all around the place.

I was attacked inside High Hrothgar once, by a totally randomly spawning pair of enemies (who always have the worst timing in the universe...). They didn't last long, even though I didn't do anything except watch (didn't want to accidentally hit the Greybeards).

I admit I've been tempted to lead that Frost Troll up to the monastery, just to see if it'd follow me inside (I've read that that can happen)... but have never actually done it. I bet the troll wouldn't last long, though.

I have to admit that I did, on my first playthrough, mistreat the Greybeards. I didn't blow them off the mountain - that never even occurred to me. I blew goats off mountains but never Greybeards. But when I learned Unrelenting Force, I did stagger two of the Greybeards and blow jars all over the place. Not on purpose, but still, and I did find it funny at the time. I also stole all their food and potions as soon as I was able without them being marked stolen, but I mean, I'm the Dragonborn and you're asking me to go on this dangerous mission, so can't we call that even? Besides what the hell are they gonna do with potions? And when given the chance I've always delivered their dried goods to them so I think that's made up for the stolen food. But I still feel bad.
Now I don't do any of that. I've learned some respect for them. But my first playthrough I did, I won't lie about that.

A few months ago I tried this, just for fun, I duped a bunch of slow poisons and tried to kite him up the hill. A few times I got him close to the stairs but he would always stop and just stand there and do the "jump up and down and slap the ground" thing until I killed him.

So I just walked in and spawned 8 of them right in the middle of the room, turned on god mode, and ate popcorn.
