There are plenty of items that get you a little more experience than daggers, but if I understand it correctly they turn out not to be as efficient because of the materials needed to create them. You might try raiding Halted Stream Camp for the Transmute spell (it's always there) and I think 50 some pieces of iron ore, then become a pickaxe hound. This will get you ore to make into silver and gold, and will up your alteration skill at the same time. When you encounter mages, keep their magicka regeneration and any alteration enchantments, so you can do more transmuting. Keep all your looted gems, and pump out gold and silver ore, then make jewelry. It's all free to get, just takes time. The more expensive, the better.

Jewelry is good, but if you can't mass-produce it (or don't wish to level Alteration), I would like to suggest making Leather Helmets. For the cost of two and a quarter leather per craft, you can gain a decent amount of experience with them, as they have a value of 60 gold (verses 25 for bracers that use one and a half leather per craft).

Quick Edit: A Silver Garnet Ring will give more experience than Gold Rings, so take into account the gems you have when you're transmuting.

You get more experience based on the value of what you're making. Iron daggers don't work very well anymore since they changed smithing to work like this in a patch. Your best bet is to head to Halted Stream Camp and acquire the Transmute Mineral Ore book located on a desk inside. There is a bunch of iron ore veins there as well, and you can always travel to a few vendors and clear them out. Turn all the iron you gather into Silver/Gold.

If you happen to be a thief or just happen to have a variety of gems, make expensive rings with gems first. If you run out, gold rings are good to spam. I would definitely recommend getting as many rings with gems as possible though.

Also, try to stack as many XP boosts as possible. Make sure you activate the Warrior's Stone for a 20% XP boost, and get a good night's sleep for a 5% - 15% XP boost. If you're further along in the game, completing a certain quest will add another 15% bonus to your Smithing XP gain.

Where to find the Transmute book:

if you are okay with using exploits for the purpose of power leveling, i would suggest making gear to radically increase your smithing ability, then make some really expensive, really powerful weapons and armor… plus, the upside to this is you can max out your speech craft skill by selling one of these gems to a vendor… food for thought… if not, i second the leather gear. something satisfying about hunting animals and skinning them :D

A really good way to do it that isn't quite an exploit is this: first, hunt some animals and gather as many pelts as you can carry. Then find a tanning rack and make half the pelts into leather, half into leather strips. Then find a forge (the best place for this would obviously be Riverwood or the back of Warmaidens' in Whiterun) and make a full set of leather armor the first time. Then refine that set of armor on the workbench. That should up your Smithing level up a bit right there. Then unless you want to wear the set you made, sell it for extra gold. After that, gather more pelts and repeat the process. Make leather bracers or leather helmet, whichever costs less leather to make (can't remember off-hand). Refine what you made at the workbench. Sell for extra gold.
This way takes more time, but is an easy way to level up your Smithing over time, without exploiting your game, which can potentially unbalance it. If you have say, level 100 Smithing at level 10 and no combat skills on par with that, you're going to be facing some tough enemies with no ability to combat them. Not fun. This is the way I myself do it for that very reason. :) Obviously, refining any weapons and armor you get your hands on once you have the relevant perk will speed up the process even more. Ah, and of course if you have Hearthfire, building houses is a very good way to level up Smithing. Quick too.

With regards to the whole leather issue, I did make a thread analyzing which is the best to use for leveling here if you would like to have a quick squizz through it. :)

It took me days just to get my smithing up to a hundred when making iron daggers. Easiest way to level up smithing is using gold ore, and silver to create jewelry I made the mistake of selling my diamonds, emeralds, (etc) If you run out of gold go to the halted steam camp for iron then transmute it by finding a spell book in there another way for gold ore is a mine somewhere in markarth I forget where.

go to riften.
do unfathomable depths quest.
grab all dwemer metal that can be melted down while on the quest (all you and your follower can carry).
go to markath.
do the quest for calcelmo? killing the spider in nchuandzel, plus the finding the journals quests.
grab all dwemer metal that can be melted down from the ruins.
get key to museum.
loot the museum, load up yourself and your follower for a third time with dwemer metal.
melt down all the metal.
make like 300 or more dwemer bows (you will need 50% iron but its sold everywhere so no biggie).
put all the bows in a container in your house.
tada you now have 100 smithing and enough weapons to enchant to also level enchanting to 100.

edit: sorry, didnt see that this was an old topic.

Kolskegger. You stop into that little mining village, off the foot bridge by the Markarth gate. They'll be talking about the Forsworn attacking Kolskegger, and you'll get the map marker. IIRC, you can come out of there with like 27 ingots worth of gold. Also, talk to the two miners, who are resting in the farmhouse. One is the owner, and will reward you. The orc will make you bloodkin, so you can trade/train with the orc strongholds. The I have to do that to get my 1H training from the master trainer at Dushnik Yal.

You can also go to Karthwasten and complete that easy quest (in the favor of the mine owner) for the orc blood-kin and gain access to those silver mines too.

thanks :)
I found that farming gold and silver takes a lot of time since you have to sleep for ages waiting for the mines to respawn, since there are basically only 2.5 decent places to farm them.
So imho, the dwarven stuff route is much, much faster.

Don't forget what Tiger mentioned, about Halted Stream Camp (iron mine, with a Transmute Ore spellbook) You mine or buy iron ore. (It's dirt cheap, so I buy it constantly, from every merchant who has any, and then turn it into silver, and then (if you want) silver into gold. Don't rush to gold, though, as silver seems to have a lot more jewelry applications, at early levels. Keep all the gems you find, mine all the iron, transmute it and make high $ jewelry.
