I am trying to find this ancient Nord pickaxe which according to the map is in a house in Ravens rock. However I have managed to break in to the house and search it but no pickaxe is visible. Has anyone done this small quest and can tell me where this axe is? I suspect I may need it for the Deathbrand barrow quest as well.

If you're retrieving Glover's borrowed axe, you go to the mine during business hours. Talk to the old guy (Corellian?) and he'll give you the spiel about his father and the mine, ending in you getting the quest for the mine. Once that dialog is done, you'll see options to tell him Glover wants his pickaxe back. Just tell him it doesn't belong to him, and he'll give it back to you. If it's showing a house, it's probably one right up near the docks and the Bulwark. That's his house, but if he's in there it's after hours.

If you don't want that, you can do the Azhidal quest in Kolbjorn Barrow, just outside the Bulwark gate.
You'll find a dark elf, digging there. Go through the routine with him, and you'll end up giving him money to fund the dig, a few times. At the end, you'll have the opportunity to kill him or let him live. He carries an ancient Nord pickaxe called Hoarfrost. You will need it for the Deathbrand treasure, as well as any time you want to mine stahlrim.

Thank you very much for this response. It was really frustrating me trying to finish this quest. Much appreciated.

You're very welcome.

Just in case you run into problems when no one is around, these are two very useful websites for Skyrim information. They are slightly different, but both contain an enormous amount of information about specific quests, characters, etc., including strategies, known bugs, and their fixes. Just type a word or two about what you need in their search boxes.
