We don't have any shovels, but my husband keeps a hoe in the cellar.

I'm a little obsessed with decorating my homes in Skyrim. I enjoy organizing and decorating in RL so I guess it just started from that. Even though the object movement is ridiculously annoying I find myself spending hours placing items, reloading, picking them off the floor, and placing them again... I know everyone that also spends time decorating can relate! I few things I've done is decorate my kids room with bugs in jars, books, and instruments. I also spent a lot of time placing potions and ingredients in my alchemy tower as well as soul gems, books, and staffs in my enchanting tower. Maybe I'll post a few photos of some different rooms for all you fellow Skyrim house decorating nerds out there!

Would love to see some pics Willow. I like to pile staffs in the corner in the front foyer, and furs over the other side. I have used the little wooden crate next to the chest in the foyer as my "Inbox" all letters go in there as if my housecarl as put them there for me to read when I get home.

I just made a house decorating album if you want to check it out. I thought posting tons of photos on this thread might be annoying to some...

First thing I did was go around and pick up any brooms, buckets and baskets. Useless clutter, I stored them in a barrel.

I use one of my large display cases in the armory for my mead collection. There are at least forty bottles piled in there. I have another case for ale, and another for cheese. Actually, I ate all the cheese to make room for more mead. I like to be prepared should festivities occur, and they often do.

I decorate my house with one simple thing......a dead body on the front steps. gives me that home sweet home feeling

I throw dead bodies in the lake to be washed down river. Don't want my little girls to come across my victims..

I used to decorate my home. Hours upon hours of setting the table or replacing dragon priest masks and paragons in display cabinets... Nowadays I don't bother as much. No one comes over to admire my handiwork My housecarl still sometimes asks me what I'm doing... in my own home! Not to mention my steward tells me to stop it when I move items around. No one appreciated my efforts so now I just use mannequins, weapon racks and dagger cases...

aww.. I would totally come over and marvel at your laborious embellishments!

I was very selective and didn't make every piece of furniture or storage and the mannekins had very selective armour, similar with weapon racks. I did keep picking up the book in the bedroom, and then the book one of the kids kept leaving on the floor. The one of the kids says they found something they want to keep as a pet. A gentle fluffy rabbit ? No, of course not, my adopted children aren't so simple, a fox !! All I get now is the sound of the fox constantly growling day and night, the bloody thing doesn't ever sleep. If only I had a lead to take it a walk .......

I have the asthmatic fox AND a barking dog. Not to mention a bard, two girls, husband, housecarl, carriage driver, two horses, chickens and a cow. Which is why I also built Winstad Manor. Just me and Valdimar, it's lovely and peaceful.

I never really got into decorating my home until recently as far as actually moving things myself. Everything you could possibly make at the carpenter's work bench outside and on the benches inside the house have already been created but I had never really thought about personalizing things until I adopted Runa and Francias. Now, I've strewn books all over the house at a level they can reach and I always leave little honey treats and boiled creme treats on their end tables before I leave on a quest.

I've also put more things in display cases than I know what to do with. My armor mannequin glitched and it won't stand on his little pedestal thing so now he stands out in the walk way, still dressed. Now that I've taken a liking to the Forsworn outfit you get if you help the Forsworn, I'll be putting my steel plated armor set on the mannequin next time I'm home.

Oh and barrels! I have an alchemy table and all the barrels around it are for five different categories of ingredients: restore, regenerate, damage, resist, and fortifying. Doesn't matter what specifically for but they all go there. And some in all five barrels just because.

Nice, I never thought to separate my ingredients, but one playthrough when I had the enchanting tower, I separated my soul gems into the strongboxes.

My Argonian has adopted Alesan and Francois. Alesan is a feral little thing, refuses to wear clothes and gets around naked with his enchanted wooden sword I made for him. Where as Farncois is a little more reserved and gentle. He has a pet crab that follows him everywhere.

My mage, when she feels like adopting, will adopt Sissel from Rorikstead. Unfortunately that means the "accidental" death of Lemkil...who is a BAD father anyway.. heh. They will live at Winstad Manor along with Marcurio and some other mages. (Sissel expresses a desire to learn magic when you converse with her)

I enjoy decorating my home with certain touches that fit my thoughts about my character. Right now I am playing a woodelf and so all my plates and bowls are wooden. I also have a lot of baskets. Since he is a hunter I build all the heads and have placed fox pelts on the dressers upstairs. He collects wine and specialty drinks, so I have Brandy, Wine and Bloodwine on shelves around my house. I too put things in the cases that mean something, like the items you are gifted with when you become a thane, or from groups you belong to, such as the companions or blades etc. I just started picking up stuff like shovels and rakes. They will go in my garden or stable. Lots of other great ideas here that I may have to borrow. Great thread!

My current character, An Oblivion-walking-murderous-assassin, has a set of torture tools down in the basement, and all of the Daedric artifacts on the weapons racks.

Her house on Solstheim, she has dozens of Centurion Gyros lining the hallway to brighten up the halls a bit.

Oh and I made an effort this time and collected all five paragons and put them in the large display case upstairs.

I like the ideas here! I too place certain items in certain areas: in my alchemy tower, all ingredients go in a side table (which has the butterfly in a jar on top). Extra potions, whether they're ones I don't have room in my inventory for or that will be sold later, go in the end table next to the one for the alchemy ingredients. In the backpack all my fortify alchemy and fortify smithing gear goes. And in the lockbox next to the backpack, I place all the alchemy recipes my character has gathered. On the shelf behind the door, I have a book detailing different enchantments (if they had one for alchemy I'd use that), with a skull on top. On the shelf under that are currently displayed two Dragon Claws, one Diamond and one Ebony I think. In the hallway on the second floor, I have one armor mannequin wearing a full set of Dark Brotherhood armor. In the lockbox on the table next to the mannequin, are rings, circlets etcetera which will all be enchanted eventually. Of course I have the Arcane Enchanter in the hallway, and in the dresser next to it are various armors and items to enchant or disenchant once my Enchanting gets high enough, as well as various empty soul gems kept on hand for whenever my character needs them (will probably move those to the satchel now lol). I have two shelves in the hallway, one has a mini display case which has the bark you need for the Dawnguard quest line, and above that is the tool to get the bark. On the shelf in front of the alchemy tower door, I have various gems and such in the lockbox to sell if my character runs low on septims.
On the first floor in the entryway, I have Vale deer and saber cat hides, one in a display case and one on that little shelf thingy on the floor next to it. In the main hall is a dining room, with the bedroom for the kids and wife on one side and an Armory on the other. I have a chest under the stairs filled with various foodstuffs and wines. In the bedroom I have the kids beds and chests on one side and the bed for the wife and me on the other. In the end table next to the main bed are all the clothes items, various Aedras' pendants, a Glass dagger and my characters wedding ring. When my character comes back home after a long adventure, she changes into either the Mourners clothes or grey version of the Fine Clothes, her wedding ring and Fine Boots and gloves. She unequips most of her weaponry except for a dagger - and being a magic user she wouldn't need much more than that anyway - because she never wants to be caught off guard. In the armory are all the armors she's either worn or gathered throughout her adventures, so she can remember them whenever she goes in. Various two handed weapons are on display on the racks because while she doesn't use them, my character likes the look of them. Extra armor goes in one end table and various quest items and papers go in another. And in the room underneath the alchemy tower she stores various ore by the cellar door to be smelted, and house building items in an end table near the armory. I think that's it. I may borrow some of your guys' ideas on decorating if that's okay.

Well the only time I've really immersed with making my house look pretty was with my thief/assassin argonian (raised by Bosmers) who adopted a couple of kids to try and become a better person

He uses his home to display his achievements.

His manikins are the armor of the important people he has slain (Captain Maro, Astrid, Mercer, Lord Harkon, the Emperor....). He has the soul gems of Maro, Astrid, and Mercer laying next to each of their manikins.

He has the soul gem of Calixto with the Beware of the Butcher letter and necromancy necklace in the cupboard near his bed. All those random things in Calixto's "museum" are also in the cupboard.

He has the soul gem of his own partially trapped soul in the display case next to his bed. The skull of Arvak is on the nightstand on the other side of his bed. Some dwemer gyros are also placed on shelves around his bed.

He has the eye of the falmer, the draw blade, canicle bark, paragons, dragon claws, ewer, mark of dibella, blood potion, soul cairne potions, and phantom potion all strategically placed throughout his house.

There are vale pelts placed on shelves around the house. Oh, and he has cupboards filled to the brim with cheese wheels. Yeah, that one took awhile to do. and of course there are special weapons displayed everywhere.

And in my snow elf's house she just dumps everything she wants to display on the floor. She'll eventually get around to it. She swears she will. She places skooma and tree sap potions in the cupboard behind the fireplace. and milk in another cupboard (she is a milk drinker ). Since she is a mage she displays staves and such on the display areas.

She gave the basement to her hubby which has pelts placed around. All types of bows are displayed around the basement. and like everyone else has said I place ingots on the stone shelves.

I collect all empty wine bottles I find and dumps them on the ground in the basement so I may have accidently turned Faendal into an alcoholic.

I love my library. I find all the books that I can and put them in alphabetical order. It makes my heart happy every time I walk in.
Unless I have found yet another book to put on the shelves.
