I can't even get my laptop to play porn on IE11 without buffering and pixilating all to heck. There's no way Skyrim is going to work well. I think I need a new graphics card.
Sucks it can't even play porn. That was the whole reason Al Gore invented the internet.
Well, that and pictures of kittens & puppies being adorable that you can send to all the gals on facebook to make 'em love you (and surprisingly, an awful lot of guys?????).

Not sure if you guys care, but I figured since you helped me out, I'll update you on how it went!

So I downloaded Skyrim through Steam, and I also got 5 mods through Steam (the process of getting mods through that other popular website... I forgot the name... was too confusing, so for now I stuck to steam). A couple of the mods were for graphic purposes, like the grass and lighting and snow, to make it more realistic. One was for more blood and accurate blood effects during combat. The last added four armored horses of the apocalypse to get. I set the game on ultra graphics, and it works great!!! Although I will say it runs slightly better in dungeons and closed spaces verses outside in the wilderness because there's less to load.

But holy plops do I SUCK. I'm just plain struggling with the controls because I'm not used to it. I was shooting arrows at things when I just meant to sprint, I was beating up Hadvar when I was just trying to pick up something, etc. So needless to say I put the games difficulty on Apprentice since I can barely walk a straight line without hitting something lol, but I'm getting there!

One thing I'm really excited about is that when I get to the time I want to work on smithing and enchanting, I can just set it at 100. I have spent COUNTLESS hours of my life in all my character's on the xbox dedicated to smithing and enchanting because there's no way around it. I think I have earned the right to get back some of those hours of my life! So I'm very excited about that.

You can get a usb dongle that will allow you to use a console controller to make the transition easier. I game with keyboard/mouse only when there no option to use my xbox 360 controller.

I also advise an exrernal fan. I think its best not to rely on onboard cooling while gaming on a laptop.

This made me laugh because that is what I would be like. I am a total newb when it comes to pc gaming.. I am still getting used to Minecraft.

Lucid is right... there are a lot of good cooling platforms you can get for your laptop. One of the reasons why laptops aren't as popular for gaming as the pc because of their teeny tiny fans. I would definitely make an investment in a cooling platform.

I wish I had been here from the start of this thread.

First of all, never download Mods from the steam workshop. It is a bad idea overall, and the mods there do not get the same updates and attention that mods on the nexus do. There are many other options out there to ensure safety when modding like Mod Organizer, Wyre Bash, TES5Edit and so forth, but for now, just download the nexus mod manager, and download that way. Mods from the steam workshop just don't get the support and, frankly, it will leave you high and dry when it comes to the best mods.

Secondly, your laptop is going to heat up, that is totally normal, unless you buy something that will attach to the bottom and actively cool it, then honestly don't worry about it. 70 degrees Celsius is perfectly acceptable for CPU/GPU temps, but it will feel very hot on your legs :).

Third, there are ways to adjust your .ini files so you can run the game with an ultra settings feel, and get better performance. If you'd like, in the future I can show you how awesome and simple this process is.

Ask any question here, no matter how dumb it may seem, it took me a long time to really figure out the ins and outs of modding, and I work in the IT industry and have for years.

Before you get too far into your current playthrough, just read a lot, ask questions and learn as much as you can. You do not want to put 80 hours into a character and find out you can no longer use that save. I've been there, done that, and it sucks.

Modding will change your life in the world of tamriel. Just make sure you learn the basics first. Post the kinds of things you want to add to your skyrim experience, and I (along with many others here) would be more than happy to help you make skyrim EXACTLY how YOU want it to be. Trust me, I love this kinda stuff.

You found a great deal on a killer laptop. Make skyrim awesome! It takes patience but it is worth it.

Also, if you played on 360, use a controller. It's just better :p
Hey, even if you played on the PS3. My friend has some mod or something that lets me play TESO with my PS3 controller.

For sure! I actually went out and bought a wired 360 controller just so I can have the plug and play features. A ps3 controller would work as well, but the fact that skyui natively supports the 360 layout makes me so happy.

Oh god. We need to get giga SKSE and SkyUI immediately.

giga, you are going to lose your mind when you see the awesomeness that is SkyUI.

Wow thanks for the info! Yeah... I'm tight on money considering I almost blew a grand on this laptop and another $40 for Skyrim (I'm a college student, being broke is normal) so I really can't afford to buy the wireless thingy or a wired xbox controller AND a fan for the damn laptop. So I'm almost completely used to the PC controls already and I'm just turning off the laptop when it gets overly hot just in case.

But the whole going through Nexus for mods just terribly confused me, especially since I never do anything other than itunes and word documents on the computer lol. I tried downloading the Nexus Mod Manager, but I think my computer flagged it as dangerous so I stopped and just went through Steam. But you're right, I've been looking at some articles rating the top mods, and they're all on Nexus

Once I download the Nexus Mod Manager thing, what do I do?? Just save the mod file to there? And then what? I don't get how to put it on Skyrim. I tried looking it up online but that didn't work out. I'm running Skyrim through Steam and everything is going great, so if I could keep at least that part that way I would like to.

Also, you said, "Third, there are ways to adjust your .ini files so you can run the game with an ultra settings feel, and get better performance. Thanks for any help you have to offer!!! :D

First off I hear ya, I'm usually strapped for cash as well. Unfortunately leaving college doesn't immediately solve the money problem. (I wish it did)

Once you get the mod manager, all you need to do, is find the mod you want on the nexus site and use the "Download with Manager" button. It will automatically start downloading it with the mod manager you installed. I highly recommend reading the descriptions for each mod you download as they will tell you quite a bit about compatibility and how the mod works within the structure of skyrim's main files. Information is your best ally when modding.

Once it is installed, you will see under the mods tab in the mod manager, the mod you downloaded. All you have to do, is select the mod, and click activate. The mod will then be installed to your data folder.

You will also notice a "Plugins" tab on the mod manager app, right next to the mods tab, that is showing you the important files (.bsa, .esm, .esp, etc.) that have been downloaded. The order that they are in on that tab is important. It is referred to as the Load Order. There are tools that will automatically sort these files into the correct order. The best one, right now, it called LooT, or the Load Order Optimization Tool. It is a very simple program, and eliminates many headaches. Loot is the newer, more efficient adaptation of a program called BOSS. When you see BOSS mentioned in a description, just imagine them talking about loot. All it does, is automatically place all of the mods you've downloaded in the correct order, so you dont have to worry about it!

Now, onto the ini's. This one is really simple, but can seem confusing. There is a "Mod" on the nexus that is called "EWI's High Pref .inis". It's not something you can download through the manager, but you can just download it to your PC. All it is is a .txt (Microsoft notpad format) file, so it is very small. All you have to do, is replace that file with the one in your Documents>My Games>Skyrim folder. Once you do that, all you have to do is open it up, and fill in a couple of blanks. It will give you ultra quality, at a very low performance cost.

This will all seem intimidating at first, but trust me, it is all very simple. I explained to my 50 year old father how to do this, so I have the utmost confidence that you will be a monster modder in no time.

SKSE is the Skyrim script extender. It is necessary for a ton of mods. It used to be quite the process to install, but now it is very simple.

http://skse.silverlock.org/

go there, and click on the very first link, the one that says "installer"

Once you do that, it will create an Icon on your desktop thay says "Skyrim (SKSE)" and it will have the skyrim logo. So now, you will use that to launch skyrim. Make sure you are already logged into steam first, but then close all of the steam windows and click that new shortcut.

Then go to the nexus mods site and download SkyUI. Right now, it is far and away the number one mod on that site (or any for that matter), and you will never look back.

SKSE is a backend system that other modders can use to make great stuff. Quite a few mods require it as a prerequisite, including . . .

SkyUI. This is a complete interface makeover. It changes almost every aspect of the vanilla UI to the point where it's hard to describe what it does, because it does EVERYTHING. But some highlights are "sort by value/weight" so you can more easily dump the heavier stuff, "control groups" which allow you to assign whole sets of things to hotkeys instead of single items, it fixes the weirdness with which key does what, nixing the problem of accidently eating/using something when you were trying to put it in a container, it gives you a normal tabbed window instead of the bizarre vanilla layout. For more cosmetics, it offers a choice of a dozen or more fonts, so even using the interface can look more in-character. And loads loads more.

Don't give it away! I always love having people download it without knowing exactly how much it will change their lives. lol

I use a cheap, old, hand-me-down, Logitech usb controller. Works like a charm.
