Post your opinions and beliefs of this Daedric Prince of dreams. According to the wiki - Having circumvented the barrier, the priest and the hero make their way into the inner sanctum where they find two of the priest's former companions. Upon defeating them and having the Skull within sight, Vaermina's disembodied voice speaks out, telling the Dragonborn that the priest is trying to deceive him/her, and that he/she should kill the priest and claim the staff for his/her own. If the priest is allowed to finish the ritual, he won't turn against the player and he may be recruited as a companion. As a result, though, the Skull can not be obtained. Alternately, if he is killed by the Dragonborn, then the Skull of Corruption will be rewarded to them and count towards the Oblivion Walker achievement.

So why would she want him dead? For betraying the group therefore betraying her? The fact that he wanted to stop her spell? Perhaps just to watch out of entertainment?

When I did that quest, I didn't kill the priest. It somehow felt so wrong... As far as Vaermina's reasons for wanting you to kill the priest, I think it is for multiple reasons. First, for him going against her and trying to stop all the bad stuff going on. Second, for amusement. Third, to prove that she has power over you and to perhaps have you as her worshiper so she can claim your soul to her realm in Oblivion when you die. In my current character, I'm going to kill the priest instead and see how that goes.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
I've done it both ways.

Frankly I really don't care about the Oblivion Walker achievement anymore since I do much more RPing now, and have no use for the Skull of Corruption so I usually leave the Priest alive despite the fact that I never use him as a companion and almost never go to Dawnstar at all, except to visit the sanctuary occasionally.

I don't always feel good about leaving him alive though after what he did, but, hey, if I have no use for an item, I may as well make an ally that I can kill later and take their stuff. I find that followers (even if you don't use them) make pretty good storage for items you don't want to lose.

When in doubt, follow the fox.
I think she's just being capricious. She wants to wreak havoc to alleviate her own boredom.

I usually stockpile the items that are rare, guard armor/shields, and daedric artifacts into the homes, usually like to put them onto the racks and mannequins. When it comes down to more followers, would you turn and kill them for the Ebony mail?

I have killed him in almost every playthrough in which I go through this quest, generally I ignore it because I don't care much for the skull of corruption but you still get the Daedric artifact (which goes toward trophy/achievement) if you kill him. Plus, I like the robes her followers wear. :)

Pffft, you think I leave anyone alive when told to kill them? Why would I do that?

Cut his head off, take the staff.

I guess Vaermina doesn't want the staff to be destroyed and is angry that he didn't sacrifice himself for her by staying.

Although I always am on the lookout for some new daedric artifacts, I usually keep the priest alive. I don't usually use staffs, (except for Wabbajack, for s..ts and giggles). Besides, it's nice to show the Daedra that they don't control you completely.

I have never used the wabbajack other than in the quest to get it. As soon as I do it goes in a chest or gets sold.
