Today was a long day, but it ended well. I spent the entire morning searching for game in the valley east of our cabin. We've always taken care not to overhunt it but lately it has been very sparse for hunting. I had to skirt around the two bandit sanctuaries, one in a fort and the other in an old tower. A bit later I came across a wagon that was burning, and there were burned corpses on the ground. I have no idea who or what did it, but I didn't spend much time trying to find out. Whoever or whatever it was would probably do the same to me.

Not long after that I was heading south down the valley and came across an old ruin of some kind. It wasn't very large, and was not too far downhill from me. It almost looked like a standing stone or an altar perhaps. I sat on a ridge and looked it over, more interested in the possibility of nearby game. Suddenly I spotted a robed figure leaving the ruins and heading my way. It seemed as if he had possibly spotted me, and I could tell he wasn't looking to make friends. He had a frost spell of some variety readied in his left hand.

I wasted no time in scrambling back off of the ledge and sprinted up the mountainside to a small cluster of trees. I sunk down into the ground and remained still like a statue. I waited for him to appear in the vegetation beyond me, but he never did. He must have lost sight of me. I was grateful for that. I've had enough excitement for one week.

I headed back to our cabin. The afternoon was fading into evening and it looked like I was going to have to try again tomorrow. But on a whim I crossed over to the west, toward the lake. I spent an hour or so slowly walking through the woods and was about to give up for the day when I spotted a beautiful elk. It was just across the road from me, perhaps a distance of fifty paces. A worthwhile shot to take.

Quickly I crouched down and slipped behind a dead tree trunk. I readied an arrow with a poison and set it to the string, then gently pulled the string back. With the string taut, I slowly peered around the trunk, praying to Talos that the elk would still be there. And he was. He hadn't seen me and still didn't. I set my aim, and confidently let the arrow go. It flew true and struck the animal perfectly, killing it instantly.

A smile came over my face. I was getting better at killing with a single arrow. My father would be so proud. I was so pleased with my kill that it took me a second to realize there was a second elk standing right next to where the first had been. She was a few paces to the right and few paces farther away. I didn't waste another moment, as I knew she was going to bolt at any second. Seeing the other elk drop to the ground was sure to spook her.

My arrow was in flight with an absolute minimum of time spent aiming. It was all reaction. And to my absolute joy, this one struck perfectly as well. The second elk fell dead next to the first. The light was fading and I now had two elk to clean before I could head home. I was tired from a long day, but elated all the same. I've never managed to kill two elk in such a short span of time before. My father almost wouldn't believe this one.

My armor is all repaired and improved now. I have some leather and leather strips left over, which is good. I'm sure I'll need it soon enough. In fact, I should probably work on getting a supply built up just for emergencies, or to take with me on a longer trip. Something to think about.

Meridia's message is weighing on me, and the thoughts of that journey as well. I haven't heard her voice since that day in the cave, but it feels like she spoke to me just seconds ago. There was a power in her voice that stuck with me, and hasn't left. As much as I'd like to forgo this request, I don't know that I can. I feel as though I'm being willed from inside to do it. Perhaps it wasn't a request at all. Perhaps it was a command ... or a simple statement of fact.

Whatever it was, it's on my mind and I can't shake it. The orb sits in my satchel at all times, wherever I go. I can't seem to part with it, as if that in and of itself would bring some calamity on me. It isn't wise to associate with daedra, as plenty of books have shown me through countless stories. It also isn't wise to deny them what they ask for.

This morning was spent climbing up a mountain and chopping up wood. The best wood comes from the trees that are higher up in the mountains. It was an uneventful hike, and I have no qualms with that. I've had a lot on my mind this week and it was nice to be alone with my thoughts. This situation with Meridia is certainly occupying my mind, and I think it's making me miss my mother and father that much more. I need their guidance on this. I don't know what to do.

Being alone with my thoughts all morning didn't give me the answer, but it did give me some peace. I've decided to prepare for the trip, whether or not I decide to embark on it. There is no harm in preparing. And I certainly couldn't leave right now even if I wanted to. I would need more potions and poisons, and perhaps more food as well. I'm nervous to travel so far from home with only the arrows I can carry. If I were to run out of arrows I'd be in a lot of trouble.

I spent the afternoon making new arrows, and I have two extra quivers worth now. Tomorrow I will look over my potions and ingredients and decide what I need to do with that next. But for the rest of this evening I'm going to sit in front of the fire and chew on some venison jerky while refreshing my memory on the various grips you can use with a bow. If I remember right, it's in the book "The Gold Ribbon of Merit".

I've decided to head to the swamplands. I'll head out in the morning with a healthy selection of potions and two quivers of arrows to help keep me alive. The swamps are home to many useful plants, several of which I'm in need of. I've never traveled to the swamps alone, and I'm fairly nervous about this trip. The swamps aren't just home to useful plants, they are home deadly enemies as well. Everything from spiders to trolls lurk in the mists.

Just getting to the swamps is a risky venture. I'll have to cross the plains, which of course means keeping watch for wolves and sabre cats. And then I'll have to navigate across the mountains, and watch out for bears and other such deadly creatures. Not to mention one could fall from a cliff and break their neck.

With only two quivers of arrows and such a long journey ahead, this will be a good test of my ability to avoid dangers. I'm hoping I can make the trip in two days, but it will likely take three. This is assuming I don't become some fiend's dinner at some point.

I've crossed the plains and reached the river on the far side. Things haven't gone as smoothly as I'd hoped, but I'm alive and safe for the moment and that is what matters.

Earlier in the day, around midmorning, I came upon a trio of wolves hunting for their next meal. I briefly considered skirting around them to the east, but there was an altar or a ruin in the distance. I couldn't see if anyone was there, but it felt like a bad decision to go that direction. So I skirted left instead and pass by another set of ruins that looked more harmless.

As I was walking past I noticed an altar of some kind had been set up in these ruins as well. I was practically walking through the old fort remains as it was, and it looked safe as far as I could tell, so I went in for a closer look. It was an altar to Zenithar, represented by the presence of an anvil, just as I've read about in books. There was a book on the altar as well, which I took with me. I will return it to the altar on my way back, but I simply couldn't leave a book behind that I haven't read previously. And I didn't have time to read it right then.

Around an hour later I came across some mammoths, and watched with some sense of relief as one of them gored a sabre cat to death. The way I saw it, that was one less that I had to worry about. But as fate or luck or irony would have it, I hadn't taken more than two steps two moments later when I saw another sabre cat just below me and it saw me as well. I sprinted away, running as fast as my legs would carry me as the huge cat circled up the rocks to give chase. I ran right past the mammoth, and wouldn't have been surprised if it had started chasing me as well, but I didn't wait to find out. I kept running, hoping that the sabre cat would come across the mammoth and allow me to escape. I don't know if it did or not, but I did manage to escape.

From there it wasn't much farther to the river, and I spent the afternoon slowly moving downstream. There are important fish to catch in the river that can be used for powerful potions, most notably the river betty. I was able to catch one of these, and collected several dragonflies as well. My father, he knew so much about survival in the wilds of Skyrim … he had taught me how to look for the dragonflies, and nearby you would generally find good fishing. Today was no different.

A bit later I attempted to climb up a rocky pass to see if I could find a shortcut to the swamps. Instead I found a bear, and quickly retreated back down to the river before it noticed me.

Just a bit ago, around the point where the river begins to careen down the rocks into the valley, I spotted some men with weapons. They were near enough to the river that I wasn't going to get past them in broad daylight. So I retreated back upstream a ways and have set up camp for the night. I won't be lighting a fire tonight.

I may see if I can sneak past them in the dark tonight, but it makes me nervous to walk around the wilds at night. Too many other creatures can see much better than I in the dark.

Late last night I snuck back down to the river with the intent to slip past the bandits. But two things stopped me from continuing. The first was simply the darkness. It was cloudy last night and I couldn't see very well, and I became nervous that I could accidentally run right into the bandits if they had crossed the river.

The second was the idea that if I waited until morning, the bandits might not even be there anymore. They might have continued on toward their stronghold, wherever that is. Or perhaps they continued on to the road to the south to waylay travelers. Either way, it was worth waiting the night to see if I could bypass them altogether.

But in the morning I found the opposite to be true. They were still camped out beside the river and there was no way I was going to sneak past with the sun burning down on me.

So I headed back upstream and then south to circle around them from the other side. There was a giant camp to the south, so I had to be careful to travel far enough to be out of sight of the bandits, but not to close to the mammoths and giants. As it was, I found the body of one of the bandits right near the giant's camp. No doubt he strayed too close to the camp and paid the price.

I made it past the mammoths and was high up in the rocks trying to figure out how to get back across the river without being spotted, when suddenly I saw two bandits running towards me with their weapons drawn. I was in shock. How could they have seen me? It was impossible.

I was about to bolt when I noticed that they weren't charging at me, they were chasing an elk. This elk had just given me a heart attack, but it had also given me my window to cross the river unseen.

As the elk and the bandits passed me and headed up into the giant's camp I left the cover of the rocks and sprinted down the hillside to the river. I splashed across it quickly, and headed straight for the cliff where my father and I had always spent the night on previous trips. My father had a story about this cliff, about how he had nearly died the first time he came across it. It was better than any story I've read in a book.

After carefully climbing down the cliff face and heading down the valley I came to the swamps. With several hours of daylight still left I made my way to the usual shelter and collected ingredients along the way. A large spider nearly killed me close to the shelter, ripping my armor badly with it's fangs. I had to retreat and find a place to hide and recover, and then when the time was right I snuck back into the mists and placed two arrows perfectly into it's abdomen and killed it.

I had to clear the shelter of several mudcrabs, as usual, but it's safe now and I'll bed here for the night. I'm down to around thirty arrows, and that's not terrible. I'll just need to be careful tomorrow so I'll have plenty for the trip back.

Today was spent collecting deathbell and swamp fungal pod and giant lichens. I've had to discard several of my potions to make room for all of the ingredients. It's not ideal to discard potions, but journeying to the swamps is no easy task, and I'd rather return with as much of these ingredients as possible. I can replace the health and stamina potions much more easily.

I'm down a few more arrows after an encounter with several small spiders this afternoon. Still, I feel fairly confident I have plenty for the return trip home. I'll be leaving in the morning at first light, and will probably make camp tomorrow night near the plains. But right now I'm going to take a look at this book I found. The evening light is start to fade and pretty soon I won't be able to see the words on the pages. It's a history tome, covering events of the last year of the first era. It should be an interesting read.

I'm setting up camp for the night behind the giant's camp. Being on the backside of it and up in the rocks I should be out of sight enough to not be a bother to either the giants or the mammoths. Setting up close to their camp will provide me some additional protection, though. I've just recently come across this conclusion, upon seeing the body of the dead bandit and watching the other bandits chase the elk into the camp. I came across the bodies of all three of them today. It seems they blundered into the camp after all.

I also came across a dog today, while hiking up the backside trail of a waterfall. I couldn't take the usual route home over the mountains by the tall cliff. A bear was blocking my access to the trail. So I followed the river fall to the old stone bridge and then headed up the road for a bit, temporarily avoiding some wolves that were chasing an elk. Eventually they gave up and turned their attention to me, and then I was down to thirty arrows even.

The dog seemed friendly, and I was debating whether to give it some of my venison jerky or not. There were two dead wolves nearby, not dead by my hand. So I decided to have a look around and see if I could find the owner. However, no sooner had I turned my back than the dog attacked me from behind for no reason. I was forced to use a half dozen arrows and put it down.

I never did find the owner, so perhaps the dog belonged to the dead bandits. Whatever the case, I feel terrible for having had to kill the dog, but he nearly killed me. It was a good thing I still had a health potion in my satchel.

It's good to be home again. The remainder of my trip was without incident, and for that I'm grateful. I took a slight detour to return the book to the Shrine of Zenithar, and left an offering of dragonfly and flowers for the privilege of borrowing the book.

I was going to read tonight but none of my books are drawing my interest and I'm tired anyways. It's been a long several days and I'm looking forward to a good night's rest in a bed for once. Tomorrow I'll need to work on my damaged armor. I think I only have enough leather and strips to make a set of boots. That means I'm going to need to do some hunting in the next day or so, and I'll only be able to wear a tunic while I do it. That makes me nervous.

Today has been frustrating. I've lost around a dozen arrows. The first half were lost trying to kill a deer, all of which missed the deer. The same goes for the second half, which were all intended for a fox. I'm not sure what's wrong but my aim is off today. I'm sitting here on a ridge contemplating whether or not I should just call it a day.

Yesterday I bagged a pair of wolves, but I still don't have enough leather to replace my mangled armor. So I'm out again today with nothing but boots and a tunic. I feel naked without my armor. And I don't have the nerve to push too far from home. I know I could find plenty of game on the plains or in the deep valley, but then I run the risk of a sabre cat attack or a troll or bear attack. And with no armor I wouldn't last a half a breath in a fight like that.

At least I've collected some useful mushrooms and flowers today. I also spent an hour fishing and caught a river betty. These are the most prized fish for me to catch. Combined with deathbell I can create a potion that will not only hurt my opponent, but also slows them considerably as well. It's been a useful potion for escaping from something fast like a sabre cat, but it would also be useful in a skirmish where I didn't want to .. or couldn't .. run away.

But right now I need hides because I need leather. I need that more than mushrooms or fish. I guess I'll hunt for a another hour or two and then head back before it's dark.

Today has gone no better than yesterday. After not finding anymore game last night, I set out this morning for the plains. Around midday, while carefully sneaking up to the edge of a small hill, I spotted four men in black robes running towards me. One of them cast a spell on himself, obviously preparing for a fight. I had done nothing to provoke them, but it was clear they intended to do me harm.

There was still a good bit of distance between us, so it made perfect sense to turn and run. As I did I heard a spell erupt behind me, just missing me. I'm not even sure what kind of magic it was. I didn't turn to find out. I just kept running, putting as much ground between the mages and myself as I could.

The good news is that I escaped and lost them. The bad news is now I don't feel comfortable returning to plains for game. Hide armor isn't going to do anything to stop a mage's spell, but all the same, I'm still feeling very naked. Unfortunately I'm just not finding any game close by. I guess I'll try the southern lakeshore, although I know there to be dangers there as well. This is not good.

The dangers of the southern lakeshore revealed themselves yesterday afternoon. I knew it was a bad idea to go there, but I was in desperate need of leather and there's always plenty of game to be had. I just knew I had to be very careful.

Things started off great. I spotted a pair of wolves and took the first down from a hiding spot in some bushes. It was a long shot but I lined it up perfectly. The second wolf ran about, trying to figure out where the attack had come from. I sat patiently, not moving a muscle, until he finally stopped and started sniffing the air. This was my chance, with him no longer moving, and I sent another perfect shot on it's way.

A few hours later I had them cleaned and had their pelts slung over my back. There were still a few good hours of daylight left so I decided to try my luck and push a but farther south along the shore. I knew I was likely to come across some deer or moose.

I successfully avoided a skeleton I happened to see wandering in the treeline, then avoided some mudcrabs, and then laid my eyes on a beautiful site. In the far distance were two deer and a moose, all just grazing peacefully at the water's edge. I considered sneaking in closer, but I was worried they would spot me and bolt. There was virtually no cover I could use to approach them unseen.

So I decided instead to try and hit them from range. When I say it was a long shot I mean it. It was the longest shot I've ever attempted, and my first was well off. Far too high. In fact, it was high enough that it didn't alert the animals. I was shocked to get a second chance, and this one was much closer, but still a miss. This time they bolted and I sprinted from my hiding spot. I had hoped to catch up to them and find another opportunity, but instead I spotted what I thought to be another hunter in trees ahead.

I approached the man, thinking it might be Azzan, since his island was close by. But a moment later an arrow whistled past my head. I stopped in my tracks, squinting through the trees to see if it was the hunter who had fired upon me. I moved a bit to get a better look, and it was a good thing I did. Another arrow snuck past my head. I realized at this point that this was not Azzan, and whoever it was, they were not looking to be friendly. Considering that, and the fact I was not wearing any armor, it didn't take a second thought for me to turn and run.

I heard some sort of magic behind me and risked a quick glance back. The bowman had conjured a flame atronach. I turned back around, even more determined to make an escape now. A fireball exploded just behind me ... burning me, but not too badly. I kept running, past the mudcrabs, past the skeletons, until I was nearly back to where the old mill is on the lake. Once there I took cover and checked behind me. I waited for a good while, to be sure I wasn't still in danger, and then headed home.

Today I worked the new pelts into leather, and then fashioned myself a new hide chestplate. I still need to make some bracers for my forearms, but I'll need more leather again. I think I may take some things to a hunter that lives up the valley a bit. Perhaps he'll be willing to trade some hides for some of the things I've collected.

I should give him this strange orb while I'm at it, and let Meridia choose him instead. I'm just a boy after all.

I visited the hunter in the northern valley today. I tried to visit him last night but I was attacked by a pack of wolves and I spent the rest of the evening skinning their hides. I had to walk back to our cabin in the dark.

The hunter wasn't interested in any of the things I had to offer. I had a gold necklace and two soul gems, and the scaled bracers from the cave. He barely even gave them a glance before he declined. I could bring him some gold for his pelts and hides. He had several nice hides for sale, including a very nice bear pelt. I may consider going back with some coins. I found some gold in the chest in the cave as well as on the bodies of the bandits by the giant's camp. I won't be using the gold for anything else I don't think.

On the way back this morning I ran right into a large moose, which must have been a blessing from the gods for the difficulty of the past week. It took two arrows to bring the beast down, and a good two hours to clean it as well. I've spent the remainder of the day working over all of the hides and preparing them for other uses. Tomorrow I'll fashion some bracers, and if I have enough leather left over I'll make some improvements to my boots and chestplate and the bracers as well.

It's been a rough few days. After spending a full day crafting new bracers and improving all my armor again, I have to do it all over again. Yesterday I headed out to look for snowberries. I want to create a potion to protect me against mages, and snowberries offer protection from frost, fire and shock magic. If I combine snowberries with three other ingredients, each of which protects against one of those types of magic, I can create a potion that will protect me against all three. This is useful not only for any skirmish that might involve a mage with knowledge of multiple spell types, but it also allows me to carry fewer overall potions. This is valuable considering I can only carry so much when I'm traveling.

The trouble with snowberries, as one might guess from the name, is that they are found in snowy regions. That means hiking up into the mountains, which means going on a lengthy trip. I know of one such pass where my father took me a number of times. It's near Helgen, where he used to live as a boy. The pass through the mountains beyond it has a fairly healthy population of snowberry plants. Of course he mostly took me there to show me various places he would fish when he was younger. But I still remember nibbling on snowberries as we walked.

But yesterday, I never made it that far. I was attacked by a large pack of wolves. I counted a half dozen in total. I was completely overwhelmed and my brand new armor was practically destroyed. I had some strips of leather with me and I used those to make a temporary repair, but I had to cut my trip short and return home to make a new set. If I'd had more leather strips I could have made do for a few days perhaps, but I didn't.

The only good news is that I did some hunting on the way back and managed to kill two elk. My aim was dead on thankfully, so I didn't lose any arrows. It cost me nearly a dozen to deal with the wolves. I may need to make more arrows before I head back out. But first, today, I must craft some new armor. I only hope I have enough leather to do so.

I'm envisioning a final showdown between Saurano Direnni and the son of Hrisskar III. Of course, the boy would be a master archer by then. Poison could leave the necromancer weakened just long enough for the young hero to separate the book and the gem. Certainly would be worthy of the family legacy. . .

Today was a great day. I finished up my new hide armor last night and got up early this morning to hunt. I decided to head out to the plains, but to stick to the mountain side of the old road. I didn't want to run into the group of mages again.

It wasn't too long before I came across a snow fox, and luckily it hadn't noticed me yet. So I dropped into a crouch and readied my bow. The shot was dead on and I took the fox with ease. And my luck continued, as later in the day I came across two deer feeding in a ravine. I was above them, but the closest deer was partially blocked by a large rock. I still had a shot, but it was not an easy one. The deer that was farther away was completely exposed, but she was a good thirty to forty paces beyond her companion. That put her total distance at eighty paces easily. So I had to make a decision between distance and obstruction. I chose obstruction.

My first shot was just a bit low, and hit the rock. The deer looked up, obviously alerted by the sound. But I already was setting another arrow and adjusting my aim. The second arrow was a perfect shot, and the deer collapsed to the ground. I quickly readied a third arrow but the other deer was already bounding away. I had hoped to get a shot off at it, but it wasn't possible. Still, my luck held out because as I got ready to clean the deer I had killed, I spotted a third deer up on the opposing ridgeline. It was feeding as well, and had it's back to me.

I slipped Valdr's dagger back into it's sheath and prepared my bow and an arrow. This was fairly long shot, somewhere around sixty paces, but I was feeling pretty confident in my abilities at this point. I let the arrow go and gave a good little shout when it struck the animal squarely in the back and sent it flying against a nearby rock.

After spending the next four hours cleaning both deer, it was time to head home. I was losing light fast. But on the way back I spotted another fox. The fox saw me, and ran across the road. But I was still feeling confident and pulled my bow out. I was planning to attempt a moving shot but the fox paused on the other side of the road for just a moment, and I seized the opportunity. A few seconds later and I had my second fox of the day.

I can't remember ever having such a successful hunting day. It makes me very happy, but at the same time somewhat sad. I have no one to share my story with, other than my father's journal. I'd much rather be telling him all about it. I miss him so much.

My armor is all improved now. It took all day yesterday, mostly just to make the leather and the strips. But it feels good to have a fully functional set of armor again. I'm going to start carrying strips of leather with me to do quick repairs while I'm out in the wilds. After my last major encounter with the wolf pack I realized I needed a way to make temporary repairs. The alternative, going without armor while out on a trip, is not prudent.

Today I hunted along the northern shore of the lake. I went farther than I've gone previously, and stumbled across an old chest hidden in a crevice in the rocks. I took a look inside but didn't take anything. I don't know who it belongs to and if they are still around or not. I wouldn't want someone taking things from our cabin while I was gone. There wasn't anything of use to me anyways .. a necklace, some gold, a gem, a weak-looking health potion, and a magic scroll. Nothing I'd need or use, except maybe the potion.

I killed fox later on in the day, and then while walking along the lake I noticed some strange stones poking out of the water. I decided to have a look, as they were similar to the look of standing stones. I took my armor off and my bow and with my knife in hand I entered the cool water. There was a structure under the water, an old ruin, but a slaughterfish immediately swam toward me and forced me out of the water. I ended up killing two of them, and removed their scales. Slaughterfish meat is not good for eating, but their scales can be used to make powerful poisons for damaging health.

The structure had a chest inside it, at the bottom of a staircase. I took a quick look inside but once again saw nothing worth taking. I'm sure most would laugh, but after leaving the contents of the chest behind I harvested barnacles off of the walls. I've never used them in potion-making, so I'm not sure what all uses they might have. I ate one today and found these could be used to make a magicka damaging poison, or a water-breathing potion. I'm not sure what other applications are possible.

It's late now, though. I didn't make it home until after dark, and I think I'm too tired to read tonight. Tomorrow I'll prepare the fox pelt and perhaps do a bit more hunting. I want a good supply of leather strips before I head out again.

- GAMEPLAY NOTE -

I already play with the restriction that if I am wounded below 50% health then all my armor has been badly damaged and must be entirely replaced. What I am also going to do now is require that I repair armor after these situations until I can replace it. In other words, if I'm on a journey and I'm wounded below 50%, then I must 'use' leather strips on each piece of armor to provide a temporary repair. If I had two leather strips on me, then I can temporarily repair two pieces of armor. Bel-Hinald wears hide boots, hide armor and hide bracers. So in this case I could repair two of these, the third would have to be dropped from my inventory right then and there. Leather strips are 'used' by dropping them as well.

If I repair the armor and then get into a another fight where my health dips below 50%, then I must temporarily repair the armor again. If I've used up all my leather strips, I must drop all my armor. It is considered unusable.

If I'm able to temporarily repair my armor, and make it home, the armor still needs to be entirely replaced at that point.

Just thought I'd share how this works in-game.

I really miss my father and mother. It's hard to come back to our cabin every day and find it empty. I miss hearing their voices. I miss my mother reading with me at night, and my father teasing me during the day. It's so quiet and dark and lonely here at night. I wish I hadn't had to kill that dog. He would have been nice to have as a companion.

I don't know what else to write tonight. I had a good day actually, I'm just lonely. On the plains this afternoon I managed my longest shot ever. It was on a wolf near an old tree stump. I walked it out afterwards ... seventy-four paces. Pretty incredible shot for me. I really wish my father had been with me. He always said I'd be better with a bow than him someday. I think this shot would have left him with nothing to tease me about for the rest of the day.

I'm going to go to bed early. I just don't feel well and I've got a long day of potion mixing ahead of me tomorrow.
