It's a big hammer.
Nord. The Nord's and how similar they are to Vikings is what drew me in. In fact, a comic book writer posted a link of the trailer on Twitter. I watched it, saw the epic stock Dragonborn fighting a dragon, and immediately said, "I want this game." I didn't find out later that it was in the same series as Morrowind, which I played briefly when it came out.

Nord is still my favorite race. But when I started playing, Dunmer were my second because of Morrowind. But as I got more into the lore, the game, and everything TES... I realized Orcs are my second. I had bad Orc feels because of Lord of the Rings. Those Orcs aren't so cool (though I know some people love them, just don't see the appeal).

Morrowind did an excellent job in fleshing out the Dunmer as a race. In my opinion, Morrowind fleshed out the Dark Elves better than Skyrim did the Nords and a far better job than Oblivion did with The Imperials. They avoid being culturally locked into any one role like many of the races while having all of the flair and diversity needed to avoid being as bland and generic as the Cyrodiil native Imperials.

Nords are strong warriors. High Elves are powerful mages. Wood Elves are woodsmen and archers. A dark elf can literally be anything.

A savage barbarian? A shaman draped in hides and bones? The Ashland Tribes.
A powerful mage? The Telvanni.
A classic soldier, warrior? The Redoran Guard.
A silver-tongued, refined diplomat? The Great Houses.
A healer, priest or paladin? The Tribunal Temple.
A deadly assassin? The Morag Tong
Support the Empire? You're probably from House Hlaluu.

Fire resistance is useful in Skyrim. Most dragons throw flames around, as do a lot of enemy casters. I just wish dark elves still had the ability to summon an ancestor spirit.

I promised I wouldn't be on the forums for a while, but your post really caught my attention. You've convinced me to try a Dunmer in Skyrim. Don't know what kind yet, but, since it's just the red eyes that creep me out, I can always just make them the fathomless black orbs and leave it at that. You're right. There are no stereotypes when it comes to Dunmer (expect in Windhelm, but, hey, it's part of the game). :) Thank you.

My first real character was a Khajiit (by real I mean actually customized his appearance and did guilds). Compared to Oblivion they looked so much better even compared to the Argonians. This also broke my usual tradition of "First playthrough, play the home team."

I went with Khajiit for my first play-through. Ended up being a jack-of-all-trades and was leader of each guild.

Since then I have created characters with every race except Orc. Just can't find any love for Orcs and their serious need of braces. . .

SO I have now created an Orc and he kind of looks like Ronan from Stargate Atlantis..(without the tusks of course, but I made them as small as possible) I must say I am loving him so far. He is a brute, does NO magic at all. Wields a warhammer. And I have given myself strict rules with him. No fast travel, dead is dead, no enchanted weapons or armour and he must sleep and eat every day. I started him from the beginning on Expert level and boy it is challenging but really fun to play. I'm sure I will break the rules at some stage, but I will try to stick with them for as long as I can.

DrunkenMage

Intoxicated Arch-Mage
First time was Imperial, mainly because I played as them during Oblivion. Messed up that character, didn't really do much with him. First thing I did was join the Imperial Legion, mainly because I wanted to join them last game :p

Second character was a Breton Mage and was the first time I completed the main quest. After that I play as all races, except Argonian & Khajiit (can't stand the bloody tail)

Wait for Dragon Age:Inquisition to come out,pre ordered :D
May, but it won't be out until next year. I think I'll wait a bit. I haven't even played the 2nd or 3rd ones yet. :)
Inquisition is out this October and its the next game after DA:2
Well that's good. I'm only one game behind. I must have been thinking one of the DLCs was a game itself. Sorry.

My mistake. It's actually November now. I had heard 2015, but, then again, that's what I get for watching cable TV. :)
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/dragon-age-inquisition-delayed-a-month-will-releas/1100-6421247/. Of course, knowing EA, they'll probably delay it again. I suppose I'll need to hook up my PS4 then. Still haven't. Sitting in a closet since there's no games I want to play on it yet.

Altmer. I always take the magic option in RPGs first up and I'd heard they were the best for magic users. I've also had a weakness for elves in RPGs, so that helped. Now it's kind of gotten to the point where I only play Altmers. I start other race characters, but I quickly dump them in favour of the Altmer. I could try and justify it by muttering about the +50 magicka they start out with which really helps in early levels and the racial ability, but really I just love Altmer and would play them even if they had sucky stats and abilities.

And yes, part of the reason is the Thalmor, but not the way you think. None of my characters have been Thalmor sympathisers (not even the one who started in the Thalmor), but their presence opens up a lot of interesting possibilities as to why my characters chose to immigrate to Skyrim and why they get randomly attacked by assassins and the like.

Agree on Dragon Age: Origins - playing it too

Origins is really good, I'm playing the expansion Awakening now. I don't know what happened with DA 2 but I don't think I'll be playing that.

DA2 is a fine game. It's not a perfect game; it was rushed and shows it, but it's not a bad game. It also introduces the new art style that Bioware has adopted for the DA series and is continuing into DA:I. And it showcases the catalyst for the Mage-Templar war.

But it's not a very good sequel. Don't expect to see much of anything familiar from Origins or Awakening, aside from some backstory and setting details, and a few characters. Even though you start the game in Lothering, it is literally unrecognizable. Everything is different.

I still recommend playing it, if only to more completely understand the state of the world in Inquisition. Plus, it hits some genuinely emotional beats, and features a few great characters. Including ones who will return for Inquisition.

To return to topic, I started out as a Nord, since they were my favorite race in Oblivion (I pretty much always played Dunmer in Morrowind). Then I switched to Orc for something different, and never went back.
