I have a bit of a problem. I wanted to play through the game with my Dunmer Battle Mage to basically an epic level. I have completed the Wizard College so far and have reached 16th level and a bunch of spells and cool items.

My issue is that I want to also play as a thief and a different race as well. Sometimes I feel like it takes away from the games I have played when I keep restarting. Like wearing down the start of the game and playing the same 1st 3 quest over and over just to get to a reasonable free play portion of the game. Yet I feel that playing as a solid thief would be different and cool. I guess the perk system is the real issue cause I feel like my Battlemage is going to be limited to not getting the coolest perks due to the spreading out of skills and perks for both magic and combat.

So here is my question, For those who have played further in the game than I, would you advise multiple characters each with a focused class and goal set (ie. thief seek money, mage seeking spells) or would you advise sticking with your first character and building a power house multi-class monster who has bested each Quest line.

Hi, I have the same problem! I started out as a spellsword but wanted to try an assassin...which I have and have not looked back. But I also wonder about other classes/races so I have about 3 or 4 lvl 2-4 characters in Riverwood :D

The worry for me also is that I just do start of the game (same area) and get bored...however...not only are the characters different but I go to different areas and do quests my other characters havn;t (since you are not forced to go to Riverwun or Whitrun).

I am "trying" to concentrate on my Assassin but will probably dabble some more with other characters, but I think I am enjoying sneaking/assissination to much to change for awhile at least :D

It is personally up to you really, you can stop your current progression and start another, but it will be slower and less fruitful in the end towards meeting your goals in that area. Basically, I would start a second character and focus that one on your secondary build, but keep your first one focused on it's current build.

The first few quests, although would get old after awhile, don't take long to complete to the point where your sandbox experience begins and you can roam freely. In my personal opinion, you would be much more rewarded taking this route than sacrificing perks in one direction or another trying to be a 'jack-of-all-trades'. Don't get me wrong, this is possible with as many points as you can use, but will take much longer than simply making another character that can focus on one or the other.

There is a mine close to Riverwood (cannot remember the name...Ember something). This is basically my testbed for new chars as there I can see if I like the way they play. That is when I fell inlove with my assassin...usually it is go in and hack/slash/burn/blast...takes about 5 mins. With my assassin I wanted to kill all of them with out them knowing I was there...I succeeded (Backstap = 1 hit kill) but took about 40 mins as I was monitoring their movements, waiting for openings etc. I found this really interesting and at this point in time cannot go back to the usuall rush in approach.

So if you are thinking of making a sneak based character try this place (or something similar) out and see if you like it

I am level 61 and played all styles on my charactor.
I have maxed gear for mage, thief and warrior and love them all.
I personally like having the option to be whatever the situation requires.
Some quests need you to be a certain role as well.
You will have enough perks to be awesome at all roles -I am still getting them each level.
I Love being stealthy some times and 1 shotting with the bow/1hand. Sometimes its fun to fireball/incinerate the baddies and sometimes I just want to go in swinging. I do recommend good BOW skills -
Makes dragon fights a lot easier. I can now 4-5 shot the Ancient dragons on Master settings - they get harder as you level BTW.
Have fun most of all - dont make too many rules for yourself !

In my own opinion I think it is a good idea to seperate characters into classes. That way when you play him/her you are playing a specific play style and can focus solely on that. I have a Destro/Resto/Alt mage and a Sneaky Archer with Conjured weapons / guardians. Both are different playstyles and love them both, but want them to be seperate.

I do plan on taking on of my characters and making him a jack-of-all-trades. I think that would be interesting itself and would still be a great character to play.

The game has been designed for YOU to control who you want to be and how you want to play. It is entirely up to you!

I feel your pain OP - I've restarted countless times, though usually I end up right back at the stealthy archer wot can steal stuff. I don't consider him a "Jack of All Trades" though because even though he has built up his Magica quite a bit, there are no perks in it and he only summons a flame Artronauch when blood hits the fan. I plan on making a straight out mage at some point though because the higher level spells look very fun to play around with, so I plan on avoiding the mages college quest line with this guy as well as the companions, debating on whether or not to have him enter the Thieves Guild (He's not a very good pick pocket) and doing those on another character to keep some of the content fresh.

Personally I suggest using separate characters. To me it takes away the roleplaying aspect to have only one character 'be good at everything'. Plus, it gets boring to play as the same character. Maybe for a time you want to play as a brutal greataxe wielding barbarian werewolf who aligns himself with the Stormcloaks. Would be a real immersion breaker for him to start whipping out spells and going to Winterhold as if he were an elven battlemage. That's just me though :)

If you find the first few parts tedious, I suggest rolling a few characters ahead of time to save you the trouble. Have one of each character type (warrior, stealth, mage) that way you have the chance to really test them all out.

My vote goes to individual "classes". That is the beauty of TES skill system is the vast number of potential combinations.

A big deterent for me of the all powerful character is if each skill is maxed out it will potentially take away from replayability.

I agree. I don't like the idea of a character being 'good at everything', makes him/her way too Mary Sue-ish and diminishes the replay value. There's a reason Batman is preferred over Superman ;-)

Auxilium

In my opinion..
I like having multiple characters, same for most RPG's I've played. I like replaying some parts of the game and compare how each character is able to handle it easier or with more difficulty.

Nightmare Shadow

Master of Shadow
I would say make more characters. I love the idea of being amazing at one aspect (sword) and horrible at the magic and stealth part. My next character will be, well I have no idea hell just getting a character past level 10 without creating a new one is a miracle for me because I love all the different races.

I completely agree. I have found that my Archer is way more fun to play, and interestingly enough, better at most of the quests I have done over my Destruction Mage! Plus, playing completely different is always great too as you see and control a different aspect of the game.
