Anyone else have difficulty playing a pure mage? Ive lvled all the schools except Illusion and for some reason I get stomped a lot harder on Expert/Master than I do with my warrior or thief.

Am I doing something wrong? Basically I walk around with two Storm Thralls(or Flame if necessary), use Lightning(or Fire if theyre immune or something), heal when necessary, etc.

My Alteration is a bit low. Something like 45 compared to 70ish Dest, 100 Conj, and 50ish resto.

im completely the opposite. getting things done fine on master with my conjuration mage. conjure up two flame atronachs, lydia. 1 of those 3 tank, if its a flame atronach, when it dies i summon another. in between i bound a 1h sword and go wild until i get agro, then i run until i lose it. if theres heaps of enemies i summon two swords and just go wild for aslong as possible :p. on my thief however, cannot kill a thing. this is with the 15x sneak damage. ridiculous!

As a Mage if you have Impact perked you really shouldn't have much trouble. Allowing your atronachs to tank for you while you stun and pound them with spells is what seems to do the trick. Also if you haven't tried Ice Storm (frost spell not the shout), it seems to be really good to help slow down multiple enemies while doing a fair bit of damage, giving you enough time to switch spells and pound on them some more!

they made the mistake again that you need some light armour to be as strong as a fighter in this game. They have still alot to learn until they make mage/dumb hack and slay equal.

You should get the Shroud Gloves for free from the Dark Brotherhood. Increases Backstab damage with Dagger to x 30! Not much that survives that I have found :D :D :D

I would try leveling up your Alteration, that way you can use Dragonhide and Ebonyflesh. Your offense doesn't mean much if you're getting two-shot. Are you using clothing or are you using actual armor?

I played purebwizard before. It was pretty good to hunt monster untill it hit the lvl40.
when i hit lvl 40, in some dungeon, monster became strong intensively. I coulnt kill them own magika. I have to wait to regenerate magika running from enemy.
I had to impove threshold of my magika and rate of regeneration.
I forgave it .

Is there any quick methods for quickly leveling up your alteration?

As with my Conjuring/Illusion guide, picking a basic spell, and then casting it 100's of time will help level you... I don't know how much Oakflesh or Stoneflesh give experience wise, but you can try it out!

I don't think you can do that with alteration the way you can use muffle to level your illusion, but I'm going to go ahead and try it because my alteration sucks, and I get killed most of the time in one or two hits.

You cant use the armor spells, but if you buy a BUNCH of Iron Ore and use the Transmutation spell(You get it in the dungeon with Amrens Family Sword), you can lvl up and make money at the same time. Also the Magelight spell levels it without needing to fight anything.

I didnt get the Impact perk because I never got Dual Cast. It seemed I always had resto in my left hand and dest in my right anyways, so I didnt want to waste a perk on it.

Impact is a must if you are going to be using Destruction as your primary source of damage. You won't need Healing spells in one hand as your dual casting will obliterate any opponent before it touches you (except other mages). It's definitely not a waste and I advise you get Impact and Dual Casting!

I forgot about the Transmutation spell, that will indeed help you, and didn't remember if Magelight was Alteration or not. Good find!

Impact is definitely a must and make sure you have atleast 170-200 hp through leveling. Also, Enchanting and Alchemy can really make a huge difference with magic at higher levels. You can make your spells cost significantly less, and when you in a bit of jam you can pop a +Destruction potion to open up the can of whoop arse.

I've been having some issues playing my mage. I'm only level 32 but I'm getting one shotted by enemy mages who use Fireball. Its incredibly annoying. I've switched it down to Novice to see if it makes any difference and its the same thing.

Have you put any points into Health? Also aside from fortifying my spell schools I tend to make sure I have some resistance on my armors. I have boots with 40% shock I got for being Arch-Mage that I all ways make sure I have on. That and a little fancy footwork can do wonders.

I've put some points into health. I have 140. Im level 32 and have been dumping points into magicka.

Definitely get that health up. Even on Adept I have 200 health at level 25 and I sometimes still get whacked by surprise frost bears. Magicka stacking is a so so endeavor. You want enough to cast your spells, but you want to focus on lowering the cost of spells and enhancing your mana regeneration. In the end a large Magicka pool becomes less of an advantage then one would think.

Was going to work on my Enchanting tonight. I do have Dual Casting(just got it) on Dest now, so next point is going to Impact.

As far as gear goes, what do you guys use? Ive got Morokei mask, Arch-Mages Robes, those 40% shock boots, enchanted ring/neck/hands that give +Magicka. Going to change those tonight for -% spell cost for Dest.

Also, what spells do you guys like the most? I just got Frost Wall(omfg love it) and Im using Chain Lightning as my main offensive spell(because Storm Thralls hurt when I hit them with too many fireballs).

I have the same gear in the main slots. However I have swapped out all my +magicka gear for more usefull things like cost reducers, and mana ragen items.

I honestly find one on one the Firebolt + Impact to be amazing. However, I also have lydia and conjured beasts to worry about so AE stuff tends to cause some problems. The Firebolt targetting for me is just to easy to not use it. Again though I am only on Adept level and 25th. So at your level it may definitely not hold its own.
