"It's probably best if we split up."...?

After leaving the grotto under Helgen Keep through an opening somewhere southwest of Riverwood in the beginning of the game, Ralof(I can't remember if Hadvar does it too) spouts this line in lieu of absolutely nothing. He doesn't give a reason, doesn't explain what he means by it, and we don't in fact split up before later, when we reach Riverwood and I'm supposed to travel on without him.

Does anyone know what the hell he's on about?

Well he did tell you that the area would be swarming with Imperials in no time, plus Alduin had flown over your heads a few moments beforehand. Splitting up is a suggestion on his part, which could make it easier for the both of you to avoid potential enemies. You don't have to go through with it, you can obviously still follow him to Riverwood like you did in your game, or you could let him go on ahead while you explore the world, maybe investigating the nearby mine or climbing down the hill to select your standing stone blessing.

I noticed that too, but I just chalked it up to a game mechanic, to tell you that you were now out of the dungeon and on free roam.

I picked Hadvar the first time, and because I have the sense of direction of an unusually stupid rock it had taken me about forty minutes to play the tutorial because I kept getting lost and backtracking. So when he said it was probably best if we split up my response was: "Sorry, if I don't follow you around like a puppy I'll never get to Riverwood by myself otherwise."

Which is why I was so surprised and unnerved when he said to me within sight of Riverwood: "I'm glad you decided to come with me." Didn't you tell me about ten minutes ago it would be best if we split up? Do you like me or not? Or is your memory just really bad?

So no, I have no idea what he's on about either.

I think it might have to do with proximity to his character. Right after exiting, I usually start off on my own and hear him mumbling this behind me as I leave him. It generally interrupts whatever he had been saying.

The idea being that he keeps talking to you if you follow him to Riverwood, but you are free to go your own way. Would look a bit funny if you ran back to him and he was still talking like you were walking there next to him. I generally try to steer clear of people who talk to thin air. . .

Yeah the line does come across a little awkward but I also believe it is the game letting you know that the guided intro sequence of the game is now over and you are set loose upon the world to do as you wish

Its just the dialogue programmed for Ralof and is a suggestion it doesn't mean you can't go with him. I've seen people rush ahead to finish the quest but I stick with him because he explains some things in the game which are helpful if it's your first time. He says I'm glad you came with me as another part of the dialogue and I believe he says it even if your not there.

A.K.A the dragon slayer from hell and back that also like shooting guys in the face with his bow of awesomenessery.

This to me is the reason, to let you know you are free to roam. Whether I chose Stormcloaks or not I always go with Hadvar because you can get free Iron and Steel ingots from Alvars forge, where as with Ralof and his family, they apparently give you nothing (except for those few items you take at the beginning)

They give you the key to the house, and then throw you out when you try to use it. lol
