In the beginning I used to join the stormcloaks then on later playthroughs I chose the Imperials even though I liked Ulfric more then Tullius but I thought the Empire was better for skyrim for many reasons but who won the war officially?

There is no official answer. Elder Scrolls VI may or may not give us a canonical resolution. I don't expect them to, unless its storyline directly stems from or relates to the events of Skyrim (e.g. the Aldmeri Dominion launches the Second War Against the Empire). If they do, I think they're more likely to give the Stormcloaks the canonical victory, because it would drive the most conflict for the next game.

Personally I think Bethesda are going to sidestep the whole issue and either not mention it at all or only refer vaguely to a Skyrim Civil War without outright stating who won in an Elder Scrolls 6. Or else they'll pull another Dragon Break like they did at the end of Daggerfall and have both sides win canonically because killing Alduin really mucked up the timestream or something. It sounds ridiculous I know, but that that is exactly what they did at the end of the Elder Scrolls 2 so there is a precedent.

My guess would be that there really isn't one. It very much depends on what the Aldmeri Dominion does next.

In other words: if the Stormcloaks win AND the Aldmeri Dominion decides to start the war again then neither Skyrim nor the Empire wins. Chances are they'll be overrun and defeated as they're fragmented. On the other hand, if the Empire wins, a significant portion of Skyrim's population will be disenfranchised leaving fragmentation again. If the Dominion does not reescalate the war then that wouldn't really matter, or maybe it will if one of the other provinces decides to start something...

OYE! Politics and War have too many variables. :)

We'll have to wait for TES6 to get that answered. And if it doesn't tell us we'll search for hints. And if there are no hints we'll spam Michael Kirkbride's mailbox. Or set the car of a TES loremaster still working for Bethesda on fire.

I think the importance of who won could be marginalized by the passing of time anyway. You could have 2 scenarios yield similar results with a 2nd Great War opening up:

Scenario 1: Empire won the civil war but now since a new war is starting, the terms of White-Gold no longer apply thus soothing much of the divide in Skyrim's Nords over the Talos worship-thing. Skyrim then is likely a bit more autonomous while still aiding in the new war with a common enemy.

Scenario 2: Stormcloaks won, giving them autonomy but likely still close ties with the empire. With a new war starting, their shared enemy gives them reason to fight alongside the Empire. Like in scenario 1, most of the underlying divisions are no longer present or all that applicable either because of the civil war result or because war is back on with the Dominion.

Also given enough of a window of time between the end of SR and the potential start of new hostilities, it could be such that most if not all the powers-that-be in SR in the 4E 200's are no longer alive and it's a completely new generation of leaders with different mindsets, strengths and problems altogether.

If I had to put money on it though, I think the official story would be something like the middle-ground scenario possible in SR where there is a negotiated truce between the sides with each side having more influence/controls in certain holds, that is to say that neither achieved total victory.

Ultimately when it comes to war with the Dominion, that will override existing animosities to a good extent. For instance, do you think Hammerfell would stay out of the war just because of anger over how they were officially shafted by the Empire w/ W-G?

My guess is that yeah, they'll probably just make a book about "The Skyrim Civil War", and leave it at that, and let the entire time period Skyrim took place in be majorly remembered for the dragons returning, and everyone in ES VI will be talking about the dragons and Dovahkiin, and sort of just HAPPEN to forget about the civil war.

Officially? Who knows.

Though by all rights one faction is winning. Without touching the Civil War, and leaving with both Hadvar or Ralof it is the same.

Just look at any of the Civil War maps in a Jarl's Longhouse or Military camp. One side is in the lead.
