I personally do not understand why some people prefer the old thieves guild in oblivion to the one in sky rim, the skyrim thieves guild are more infamous and act like the mob while the oblivion guild were bunch of panzies

Well, I guess the reason I preferred the Oblivion guild was the questline. Just seemed more interesting to me. It actually required me to sneak around and steal stuff (to unlock better fences), and it had a nice heist at the end.

I really can't regard the Eyes of the Falmer thing as a proper heist, since it's basically just a regular dungeon-dive.

This would probably be it.

They Grey Fox quest was a thousand times more involved and interesting than anything The Thieves Guild threw at you. The boots of Spring-Heel Jak! The Grey Fox mask reward was also better than a set of pretty neat armor (with crummy stats) or a skeleton key you have to return to complete the quest.

It's not even close, honestly. Just like Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood completely poops all over Skyrim's. Well, okay. Maybe not that bad.

I agree 100%

It's weird how in Skyrim you have to return the Skeleton Key "Or else", while in Oblivion, Nocturnal gives it to you.

You don't have to do the thieves guild storyline to the mq
you know in Skyrim you don't need to do that right. Just go to the flagon and ask Vekel where Esbern is, you can either beat him in a brawl of pay him some money then he will tell you where Esbern is and the Theive's Guild will then side with you when the Thalmor show up.

In Skyrim the key was unlawfully taken. So there's a reason.

Oblivion you were a thief. You were punished if you killed on a mission. So you had to be more careful, especially in castles and the Imperial Palace which required you to watch guard patrols and time your movements.

The real question is.... Who in the right mind actually likes Skyrim's thieves guild? What makes this guild quests so pleasurable? IMO it's them that are a bunch of little pansies. They make a living from larceny, framing people of murder, forcing people to permanently close their business, and the list goes on.

They start crying like little babies when karma finally reaches up to them, from the very same person who is suppose to lead them. The talk of honor while confronting this person is just bullplops at it's best. Theirs no honor in doing what they do. This person was completely right, and it's too bad that you weren't able to side with him and destroy the thieves guild for one and for all.

Oh and theirs no consequences for your actions either.

Yeah, by Mercer Frey, not me.

That's another thing. Why is the entire Guild punished for the wrongdoings of Mercer Frey?

Technically, if your caught you are either beaten to death (loss of life), have to bribe the guard (loss of money), or spend time in jail (loss of stolen items + loss of some accumulated skill progress).

Unless you are a Thane of the particular hold. Which begs the question, are you just playing to accomplish everything or did you have a particular RP reason for either becoming Thane and/or doing thieves work after doing so?

Personally, my reason is twofold.
1. They weren't some scum on their last legs waiting for you to drag them out of the sewer. They were powerful. They had standards. They stole from the rich and looked after the poor, and the beggars were their eyes and ears. Now they fell so hard that you need to personally save their asses.
2. You steal a fluffing Elder Scroll.

To motivate his guild to turn on him and return the stolen skeleton key. Worked pretty well.

The Guild would've turned on him anyway after they found out he had stolen pretty much everything of value from them.

I think that pretty much summed it up. As far as Nocturnal is concerned, the guild let this happen. If they're so incompetent that they can be betrayed by a high level member and don't even realize their vault is empty for decades, they can stew in some bad luck until they get their plops together. I suppose you could say she grounded them.

Well, me. I like them. Of course, I haven't gotten to them in Oblivion yet (I just got it) so I'm probably not the best person to ask! :)

I think the Thieve's Guild was meant to deal with Nocturnal and for people to become Nightingales rather than being an actual thief. Like the Companions.
