So I have been playing Morrowind and I came across a quest which required me to go to a dwemer ruin. Long story short, there were ash piles from Dwemer all over the place where you would expect them to be. In beds, in repair shops and so on. Which also shows that the even that destroyed them hapened at night.

What further goes to show they are dead, and possibly in great torment, is the Skyrim quest in the College, where someone replicates Dwarven method and ends up dead and tormented

What are your thoughts about this?

I don't know if they're technically dead but I remember reading that their bodies perished like you said above and their souls somehow became the brass skin of the Numidium. Whether it's a fact or theory I don't know. I'm still not sure what happened to Arniel either and why you're able to summon him. Maybe he was somehow bound to you like the Dwarves were to Numidium? Just a thought.

But their bodies turned into ash aparently, probably burned to death the moment the heart was struck

So I wonder who cleaned up all the ashes in Skyrim?

Maybe they were too lazy to do it there?
But Morrowind sure has their ashes in places they would be.

How do you backstab a Dragon?

You're right. Maybe they all trekked to Morrowind to make ashes of themselves. :)

Come to think of it, the ashes can only be found in undisturbed dwemer sites. All sites in Skyrim are inhabited by someone other than Animunculi.
