Yeah mass-murdering samurais wont happen for a while. Japan doesnt have quite the military nor mindset for that for a while (if ever again)

I feel there is a lot of "History repeating itself" involved. William Butler Yeats had this strange idea that war is part of a cycle of history and represents the end of that particular cycle.

I know we dont think about it that much but I wanted to ask. Isn't Russia technically part of the "Western World?"

What if nuclear war is the only way to start the zombie apocalypse? :-o

Oh thats a tough one... As long as the nuclear war doesnt affect Australia but the zombies do :D

Nothing affects Australia. We can't even be invaded, cause we're tough sons of bitches. United States tried to 'invade' during an Military exercise using Marines and a Naval fleet, they got beaten horribly. Their CO stormed into the HQ and complained his forces faced the best Australia had to offer, jaw dropped when he was informed his 'enemy' were just Australian Army and Air Force Reservists.

Now we're training their Marines up in Darwin and our Air Force trains many of their fighter pilots.

Ever since they fought alongside us in WW2, we've been very close allies. America and Australia together just pwn everything. Our tactics are so different they compliment each other.

Should get the American's to train you. That way in several years, you'll be able to threaten them.

They have an amazing ability of giving weapons, explosives and combat training to people who then turn against the West.

Very True. The CIA trained the Al Qaeda. The reason? We thought they would protect western interests against the Soviets. Looked how that turned out for us....

And here I thought all we wanted was for them to beat the Soviets. Technically different though at the time it was Western Interests to keep the soviets out... But Details.

Honestly talking with my friends who are international affairs majors and people who talk about it all the time it is interesting how complex even the most "simple" concepts are.

Just like the US backed the Syrian rebels only for them to turn into a destructive rabble of sorts that may not even be worse than Assad. You Americans never learn :p

Admittedly, I am not sure why people keep expecting American action. :p It is a lose-lose for us. But it almost always becomes a damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Perhaps if the Americans didnt stick their finger in everything and think that the world revolves around them, than they wouldnt feel the need to get involved in everything and people would expect less of 'American Action.' ??

Yes, America is a super-power. Yes, they have one of the most capable military outfits and yes, they are involved with many alliances. That still doesn't mean they have to get involved in absolutely every falling out on Earth...

It sounds way to exhausting to be America in my opinion... but than again, I'm a lazy Aussie ;)

38 pro-Russians have died in a building fire started by pro-Kiev molotovs in retaliation for violence that happened earlier at their camp. I'd say civil war and Putin involvement may be imminent.

Or a Succession War. Either way this could be a minor spat or a bigger problem. Hmmm. I think Putin involvement is already happening so that is one prediction down.

Wait, what's happening? I thought Crimea already became a part of Russia?

This is more than a minor spat, first time a large amount of people have died from either side in retaliation. This and the deadly "anti-terrorist" operations by the Ukrainian army have caused the situation to greatly escalate since this thread started. I should reword and say direct Putin involvement :p

Crimea is technically part of Russia (although nobody but Russia and Crimea considers it to be legit) but now the Eastern part of Ukraine, the Russian side, are protesting themselves in multiple cities. Armed gunmen have taken key buildings in some of the cities (some say they are Russian soldiers/Russian sponsored) and because of this, the Ukrainian army sent in "anti-terrorist" squads to quell the defiance. It was unsuccessful, some soldiers defecting, some of them being disarmed by the armed gunmen and sent back and yesterday a small clash broke out where 2 helicopters were shot down and a few people killed/wounded. Pro-Kiev supporters set up a camp at Odessa in Eastern Ukraine and were met with violence from pro-Russians, I think someone was wounded. In retaliation, the pro-Kiev supporters threw molotovs at a pro-Russian occupied building which ended up burning down and killing 38 people inside of it. 4-7 pro-Kiev supporters were also shot in the chaos.
