*How* Vendors Get Merchandise?

It was during a routine "shopping trip" through Whiterun just the other day when Aroniath's inventory caught my eye. He has 7 ebony battleaxes in his inventory, legendary. The fact that they are legendary means that they were mine at one time. I improve everything before I sell it, and it's not uncommon to see an item I've sold in a vendor's inventory.

This is where my brain is stuck though. I most certainly *did not* sell these to Aroniath. Even with the applicable perks in the speech tree, he never has near enough gold to buy ONE. There is a slim chance (not likely) that I may have sold ONE to his brother - as I always buy the ebony arrows, iron and sometimes the leather, but again - it's not likely he had enough to buy them either, and I'm not sure if they trade inventory anyways. It is a bit more likely that I sold one, or may be even a few more to Warmaiden's. It'd be one thing if he & his brother traded - but he & Warmaiden's? I don't think this is likely. Nor do I think it's likely that I've sold that many in Whiterun ever.

Which brings me to another, and no more or less likely contemplation. Did Aroniath steal from me? I've always stored my crafting and sale items in barrels in Whiterun. It's easier than running in and out of my house when I want to use/access them. I'm level 86 & I've never lost anything this way. My sale items are stored in the 3 barrels next to Carlotta's stall - sorted by value because I have so much crap that the barrels lag if I don't break the mass a bit. Humor has certainly crossed my mind knowing that folks are just steps away from a horde that could afford them the entire town of Whiterun many times over. The barrel they would may have been stored in has many more items, and several of more value. I may have had these in an other barrel, may be I had set them aside for some reason. Don't know, I may try to go back through my saves to see if I can pinpoint when he got them - but the way I do my saves - I have several after 85 & everything before that is just every 5 levels so I doubt I"ll find out what happened. I do know that NPCs who are not followers will pick stuff up - as Elisif ended up with Firiniel's End during Bound Until Death. We all know that followers will pick up stuff like arrows or weapons on occasion.

Any ideas from someone who may know how they obtain stuff? Perhaps someone who has access to and understanding of the programming that would explain if vendors trade with one another or loot barrels? In my research of Aroniath, I realized he a DB target and I'm tempted to kill him just to get my stuff back. I stopped the DB contracts when I had advanced far enough in the game because I don't like to wipe out normal NPCs if I can prevent it. It's not even about $, as I have more than I'll ever be able to spend in the game - but more of a "how/why" and principal contemplation at this point. I play on Xbox if it matters any.

He took them from the barrel. There is no other way. I found a file where I had them and he didn't, level 85 & contemplated going back but I've done more than a dozen quests, finished work on the 3 hearthfire houses & added a bunch of inventory since then (which I track so going back is a pain the butt that takes a few hours). I'll consider it a lesson learned and move my stuff to Lakeview which I'd planned on doing anyways - but it's just so convenient to have it all here - Whiterun is my "base", may be time for a new one ;). Still haven't decided if he must pay the ultimate price for taking my items though - the value of what he took exceeds any potential future gain from him through trading.
