The Witcher may be coming to Hollywood in a couple years. Studio Platige Films announced it’s teaming up with the Sean Daniel Company (producers of the Mummy trilogy) to create a live-action feature film adaption of his exploits. Thania St. John is writing the screenplay and Tomasz Baginski is slated to direct.
Here’s the deal, though: this isn’t actually a video game film. The Witcher games themselves are based on a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, and it is these novels that will form the base for what Platige hopes will become a series of movies. It’s also worth nothing that Sapkowski does not consider the games canon, so if this project goes far enough to make it to the big screen, don’t look for anything game-specific.
However, if The Witcher had not become a series of hit video games in the first place, it’s unlikely we’d be hearing about a movie right now. The Witcher movie is currently in pre-production for a targeted 2017 release date.
