Ever since 1985 the Japanese game maker Koei has been producing endless installments of a strategy game called Romance of the Three Kingdoms. They’re up to the thirteenth one now, but it hasn’t been easy going lately. The third Three Kingdoms game was released back in 2008 for the Playstation 2, and only one other game has been produced since then — which was never released outside Japan.
But the series isn’t dead! Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 has now been confirmed to be coming Stateside. The series is set in ancient China and boasts a selection of over 700 historical characters from the Three Kingdoms era to choose from. It’s also one of the few strategy JRPGs where a conflict can be resolved peacefully, with no fighting at all, if you’re good at negotiating.
This trailer from Koei will be the first glimpse Western gamers have seen of Romance of the Three Kingdoms since 2008. Enjoy! The thirteenth game is scheduled to be released this July for Playstation 4 and PC.
