A new Kingdom Hearts is about to come out. No, not 3. There’s a reason you’re just hearing about it now: it’s a mobile game.
Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ is the name of a new freemium title for iOS and Android. Instead of Sora or any other character, you play as a new Keyblade wielder of your own design. If any of this sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the reincarnation of Kingdom Hearts χ, a browser game.
Storywise, this game takes place years before any other in the series, main or spinoff. But you won’t have to play it to fill in the story once Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out. An hour-long cinema of the events in Unchained χ, called Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, will be included in the bonus section of the next console KH release, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
So why play it at all? Because it’s free and you might as well try it. Director Tetsuya Nomura would like to add it’s the perfect way for anyone who’s never played a Kingdom Hearts game to get into the series, as it starts you in the beginning and is easy to control. “I would love for people who have not yet played Kingdom Hearts to take this opportunity to casually jump right in with a blank slate,” he says.
Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ will be out on April 7.
